The CBP Data Center Support Services project provides comprehensive data center support to the CBP Office of Information Technology (OIT) in the area of Enterprise Infrastructure. As a SQL Database Administrator, the primary responsibilities will be to support the Database team in the administration, development, and testing, of database platforms and supporting functions such as designing, implementing, and maintaining new databases, backup/recovery and configuration management. This includes management of the systems, monitoring of system performance / system health, responding to production issues, providing on-call support, maintaining high system availability, and seeking out and implementing efficiencies through automation, scripts, or other tools/methodologies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working with other teams to consolidate database instances and storage using capacity and performance analysis tools to identify underutilized instances, duplicate copies of data and identify associated server, network and storage resources that can be “right sized”

  • Support the database engineering team in integrating, implementing, and operating OIT Database systems (Datacom/DB, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle) across the entire enterprise and with cloud service providers to support 24x7x365 availability.

  • Conduct problem root cause analysis and isolate system problems utilizing diagnostic and system management tools (i.e. system dumps and system/component traces, monitoring tools, vendor problem data bases).

  • Maintain security hardened baseline configurations and deploy security patches, software maintenance patches and new software releases and supporting products infrastructure as directed by the system owner, policy, or the Cybersecurity Directorate.

  • Support the engineering, integration, implementation, and operation of a virtualization strategy to include Database server consolidation, storage consolidation, and automation. Automation includes seamless Database provisioning, and non-disruptive workflow/application/data migrations.

  • Maintain up-to-date documentation of all procedures, infrastructure diagrams, system configuration and baseline standards, implementation plans, system back out plans, system recovery plans, maintenance plans, system upgrades, and all system changes.

  • Support resolution of incidents and execution of approved change requests.

  • Design and implement automated responses to system issues (e.g., automatic failover, resource allocation adjustments).

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in administering and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server databases (2012/2014/2016/2019) in a clustered and non-clustered environment

  • Hands-on experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and troubleshooting

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment

  • IBM DB2 PureScale

  • DB2 ACS (Advance Copy Service)

  • IBM InfoSphere Change Data Capture (CDC)

  • DB2 Data Server Manager (DSM)

  • MySQL

  • Oracle

  • ETL Processing

  • SQL Scripting

  • VMWare and cloud/virtual environments

  • SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS, AND CLEARANCES:

  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance OR CBP Background Investigation (preferred), US Citizenship with ability to obtain a federal Public Trust clearance (required)

  • 3 + years of experience and a B.S. degree. Bachelor of Science (BS) can be substituted with an additional 4 years of related experience.

  • 3+ years of experience as SQL Server Database Administrator for 24x7 operations (must include installation & configuration in a production environment)

  • 3+ years of experience with database migrations and monitoring involving SQL Server, Oracle, and/or MySQL.

  • 3+ years of experience with ETL processing, data modeling, and SQL scripting

  • 3+ years of experience managing Microsoft SQL servers in VMWare and cloud/virtual environment.

  • Hands-on experience installing and configuring SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)

  • Certified MCITP (Microsoft Certified IT Professional), preferred

  • MCSE -Microsoft Certified Solution Expert: SQL Server, preferred
