Johns Hopkins University Environmental Sciences and Policy Field Course Assistant in Remote, Maryland

We are seeking an Environmental Sciences and Policy Field Course Assistant Seminar who will be responsible for executing the required on-ground seminar experience in close collaboration with the faculty of record and according to guidelines set by JHU for the Environmental Sciences and Policy program. The seminar will take place over ten days, most often over two consecutive weeks, in a location chosen by the program. Some pre-seminar and post-seminar responsibilities will fall within the scope of the scheduled semesters and outside of the 10 days of on-ground field visits.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the faculty leader in duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to creating course content, lectures, logistics, and assisting in establishing venues as vendors to facilitate payment.

  • Communicate regularly with the faculty of record to ensure the seminar meets student expectations and course learning objectives before, during, and after the seminar.

  • Contribute professional contacts and relationships to facilitate student access to heritage professionals within the host city.

  • Participate as required in all seminar activities as the assistant to the faculty of record, ensuring the seminar runs as smoothly and productively as possible. This may require thinking fast on your feet and making last-minute changes to the established program.

  • Facilitate class discussions as required around relevant seminar coursework.

  • Work with student groups on project work as required to enhance the learning process, including meeting with teams and working through drafts.

  • Assist in supporting and assessing student progress (including grading) as required to facilitate the appropriate scaffolding of feedback during the onsite portion of the seminar experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences and Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Attended a JHU ESP field course as student or alumni.

  • Field course assistant must have current Passport and be able to travel to various field destinations.

  • Has experience with camping and hiking.

  • Has completed mental health or first aid training within the last 5 years.

  • Has completed AS.420.670 as a student.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the host locations and topics featured in the field course.

  • Ability to drive a large vehicle with students and supplies.

Physical Requirements

  • Good health, physical fitness, and mobility are essential.

  • Faculty and students are on the move in field courses and the ability to swim and hike over uneven terrain is expected.

  • Expect to spend time swimming, walking, hiking, spelunking, riding on a boat and traveling by small plane.

  • This position is physically challenging and requires long days in a humid or dry climate and the weather can vary drastically.

  • The seminar requires significant walking (up to 5 miles in a day) over challenging terrain, familiarity with boat travel on rivers and ocean, swimming experience, ability to lift 25-50 lbs, and general health over a two-week field course duration.

Starting Salary Range: $19.75 - $35.35 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

Employee group: Casual / On Call

Schedule: Hours will be concentrated from 2/10-2/19/25 with some preparation and wrap up time. Monday-Sunday, hours will vary with a maximum of 8 hours per day.
