BUNZL Technical Sales - Food Packaging Specialist in Remote, California

We are adding to our team and seeking a Food Packaging Specialist in California. The Food Packaging Specialist is a technical sales role, catering to a customer base largely focused on animal proteins. As a member of the Bunzl Processor Division food packaging team, the candidate will support business development by supplying technical knowledge and guidance for food packaging materials. The role’s primary focus is on sales growth by assisting National Account and Field Sales representatives. By understanding customers’ needs, the Food Packaging Specialist will utilize their knowledge of BPD material offerings as well as their relationship with BPD vendors to provide materials which meet or exceed performance expectations. The Food Packaging Specialist will work with Category Management by providing input on vendor material offerings and customer demands. They will also collaborate with BPD Equipment Service Specialists during film trials and as needed for troubleshooting.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist sales team as needed for customer calls and provide guidance on prospective customers.

  • Identify opportunities within accounts for core BPD packaging items and potential new items.

  • Through voice of the customer, identify opportunities where BPD films can offer improvements such as: reduced leakers, decreased downtime, increased shelf life, and overall performance.

  • Ensure successful transition of packaging at the customer.

  • Collaborate with Equipment Specialists as needed for film trials and troubleshooting.

  • Work with Sales Management to promote product line growth strategies.

  • Understand vendor capabilities to meet technical needs and assist in identifying new vendors for growth opportunities.

  • Provide training sessions for the sales team as needed.

  • Participate in vendor training, industry tradeshows, and internal sales training/leadership development.

  • Actively participate in creating and implementing BPD packaging strategies.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent technical experience in the field of work.

  • Preferred 5 or more years’ experience in food packaging industry. Distribution experience a plus.

  • Sales experience in a relevant market such as food/meat processing a plus.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. Note that Excel is used regularly.

  • Ability to quickly learn new computer programs. AS400 experience a plus.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Because of the distribution model, it is important that the candidate works well with a diverse group. Must be able to provide customer service to BPD sales, BPD customers, and work well with the BPD packaging team and vendors.

  • Significant travel is required. Minimum of 50%. Company vehicle provided.

  • Due to the significant travel involved, the ideal candidate will live near a major airport in California.

BPD California's salary range is $115-160,000 plus bonus eligibility based on experience, education, and geographic location.
