Microsoft Corporation Senior Mechanical Engineer in Redmond, Washington

The Cloud Operations + Innovation (CO+I) business is critical to delivering on this mission and vision, building and operating Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, which is growing rapidly in response to unprecedented demand for Microsoft services. CO+I operate one of the largest cloud networks on the planet – comprised of more than 160 Datacenters, 130+ edge sites, 2+ million miles of fiber, and millions of servers and network and storage devices.

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations and Innovation Organization (CO+I) is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for the New Technology Introduction team within the Office of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer). This position will leverage their deep Mechanical engineering expertise to support the design, development, and validation of next generation, cutting edge data center technologies. This includes design of Mechanical systems from the ground up, evaluation of existing solutions to provide insights and design feedback, and additional Mechanical engineering support as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Develop conceptual designs, scope of work and design reviews of project plans for Research & Development (R&D) facility or field-testing scopes for new technologies for data center.

  • Build and maintain Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) library in support of R&D activities.

  • Work with partner teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of mechanical systems.

  • The Position will require some travel for “Factory Witness Testing”, equipment and engineering vendor interaction in the design process, as well as final commissioning of the installed systems. 

  • Interface closely with Technology team, Internal procurement team, Engineer of Record, General Contractors, and partner teams to deliver the solutions needed for projects.

  • Review construction drawings, specifications, design guides/standards, sequences of operation, and commissioning documents for technical compliance.​

  • Establish and coordinate maintenance & safety procedures, maintaining cooling systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 11 years of experience in architectural, mechanical, or construction engineering for mission critical or high-tech industry projects.

  • Fundamental understanding of the International Mechanical Code and Uniform/International Plumbing Codes

  • Licensed Professional Engineer.

  • Experience with CAD, Solidworks, Matlab, Bluebeam, Sketchup etc.

  • Demonstrated experience with critical datacenter critical environment equipment

  • Technical knowledge in the operation of facility environments' various heating and cooling systems. (Centrifugal chillers, chilled water, adiabatic, thermal storage systems, Computer Room Air Conditioners, Computer Room Air Handling, etc.)

  • Possess a high level of understanding of commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter design.   

  • Working knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct-Digital Control (DDC), and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).

  • Understanding of maintenance & operation of critical environment equipment.

  • Knowledge of construction techniques, terminology, and documentation (Ability to interpret blueprints, electrical one-lines, construction drawings etc.)

  • Able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament.  

  • Effective leadership competencies and willingness to collaborate and work cross- functionally to maximize business results and positive.

Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
