We are seeking a Principal UX Research Manager to help us with the next wave of AI-powered products and web experiences. We’re looking for a leader with exceeding UX research vision and people management skills; you should have deep experience in multi-disciplinary research, experience managing individual contributors, and be comfortable with the ambiguity involved in inventing version 1 experiences. You will lead your research team to help concept, research, and prototype, and refine new customer experiences powered with AI, as well as help evolve our design system, working across teams to bring design coherence to our framework and create beautiful, inclusive, and accessible experiences that customers love.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively identifies and prioritizes research needs and potential problem areas that need to be researched. Defines and aligns the overall scope of work for the team within the Engagement Experiences Team (Bing Search, Microsoft Start, Design Platforms, and XD team) with partners priorities (e.g., product management, design, engineering). Drives plans for research studies and/or programs for a product line, brand, or franchise.

  • Applies research methods for effective execution for the Engagement Experiences Team. Guides multi-person research efforts resulting in desired product outcomes.

  • Leads others to use sense-making/analysis to synthesize and distill data for a feature area, product line, brand, or franchise into actionable insights. Reviews and analyzes quantitative and/or qualitative data to draw conclusions for WWE feature areas and products.

  • Shares insights in order to activate design and engineering processes from insights for a feature area, product line, brand, or franchise across the division. Creates and drives innovative communication methods that promote an emotional connection to a customer, and conveys real user stories that revealcustomer insights. Communicates insights to effectively influence product direction with relevant stakeholders and leadership that impact business.

  • Leads research that identifies and clarifies who the customer is and the critical parts of their context in order to inform product strategy and user experience. Leads research to identify, understand, and prioritize key customer needs (e.g., Jobs To Be Done) and journeys.

  • Leads generative research to determine what solutions or concepts should be used; addresses business needs while making a business case for the research to senior leadership in partner organizations. Focuses more heavily on identifying customer problems that lead to a solution rather than validating a solution in search of a customer problem.

  • Guides cross-disciplinary research efforts resulting in desired product outcomes. Provides coaching to a variety of stakeholders on how to apply user research and ensure accountability on being customer driven.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 6+ years User Experience Research experience

  • OR Master's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 4+ years User Experience Research experience

  • OR Doctorate in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 3+ years User Experience Research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 10+ years User Experience Research experience

  • OR Doctorate in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 5+ years User Experience Research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years relevant domain experience within technology sector.

  • 4+ years experience in research methods impacting both product direction and detailed experience design.

UX Research M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
