The Teams Telemetry client Instrumentation team empowers critical business metrics for Microsoft stakeholders while empowering the product to make data driven decisions. Our team is committed to driving innovation tooling, implementing automation, and leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to provide quality telemetry signals.

As a Principal Software Engineering Manager on this team, you will manage a technical team to develop client solutions that are responsible for ensuring telemetry data governance, controlling telemetry cost of goods sold (COGS) and providing insightful data for our data engineers and feature teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coach a growing team of software engineers; create clarity, communicate teams' vision, strategy and progress to peers, partners and senior leaders; provide guidance, hands-on assistance, best practices and trainings, establishes team culture with emphasis on customer focus and engineering agility, removing barriers and enabling the team to be productive.

  • Effectively lead architectural reviews, planning and execution processes, creating robust engineering plans. Make timely decisions to meet security, reliability, quality and shipping goals.

  • Consistently identify, reward and manage growth and help all team members achieve the most in their careers.

  • Build a team with diverse viewpoints and capabilities needed to achieve business objectives.

  • Find opportunities for collaboration across teams even geographically distributed including program management, contribute on cross-team commitments, and achieve scale by enabling the work of others.

  • Translate business requirements into a strategy for systems solutions, derive data driven insights, building experiences that empower users to do more.

  • Lead the continuous improvement of engineering and quality practices. Work across business groups to ensure the long-term integrity of a product area.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience designing and building highly available distributed systems at scale.

  • 3+ years of experience in data pipeline and/or telemetry systems.

  • Experience building, managing and/or leading a team of Software Engineers.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience as tech lead or mentoring early in career employees.

  • Experience with agile methodologies.

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
