Microsoft Corporation Principal Design Manager in Redmond, Washington

The Developer Division Design Studio is looking for a Principal Design Manager to join our team and lead our Emerging design work, managing the design team for both our Education and Special Projects efforts.

In this role you will help to ensure that human insight – at the individual and market level – is at the center of our education strategy, both in K-12 and higher education, improving the value students and professors find in our offerings. We aspire to help address retention, diversity, and persistence in computing through programs, partnerships, and products like Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, GitHub, Codespaces, and MakeCode. Our education objectives are to help inspire younger students through Hands on computing education with fun projects and immediate results for learners at different levels, and to develop a skilled and diverse techforce from the 72M postsecondary students learning computer and data science today.

Your responsibilities will involve leading and supporting the team by modeling, coaching and caring for them as individuals and designers. Additionally, you’ll be expected to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (program management, development, user research, et al), identifying opportunities for design, imagining new possibilities, and bringing those ideas to life through engaging digital experiences. You’ll do this by managing the team to collaborate across a diverse set of disciplines, both within Developer Division and across Microsoft, while developing a positive work environment that fosters inclusivity and a growth mindset.

Our ideal candidate has experience in the full life cycle of digital design, from envisioning to concepting to prototyping to execution. Part design thinker and strategist, and part maker, in this role you might be leading the team through sketching wireframes and building an envisioning video one day, facilitating a design workshop the next, and wrapping up a week building and testing digital prototypes with senior cross functional partners or students and professors.

Critical to this role will be to inspire those around you, empathetic people management skills with a servant mindset, the ability to be comfortable in extremely ambiguous environments, break down large and complex problems into solvable chunks, and a burning desire to manage complexity on behalf of our customers worldwide.

You will be joining a studio of talented and enthusiastic designers working on software development tools and technologies who focus on defining, designing and delivering an exceptional, customer-centered experience for developers and their teams. The design challenges we work on span AI integration, client applications, multiple programming languages, data science tools, source control and more.

All candidates will be expected to provide and present a portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams through the design process, from vision building to prototyping, through execution and implementation.

  • Co-design measurement, learning, and optimization strategies with partners that will enable the team to build solutions for long-term success.

  • Create solutions that address a range of challenges, translating user needs and real-world constraints into valuable, effective digital experiences.

  • Create and/or lead the creation of prototypes of different levels of fidelity to help determine design direction for a project.

  • Construct information architecture, interaction models, customer flows and journeys, schematics, and interaction design that bring new ideas to life

  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team, bringing depth of design knowledge to partner across a wide range of research approaches, including the Hypothesis Progression Framework (HPF), generative, rapid and nimble iterative loops of prototyping, user feedback, and qualitative and quantitative studies, all to drive human-centered, inclusive design.

  • Connect with customers, including students and professors, in collaboration with cross-functional partner teams to get inspired around systemic challenges, articulate user needs, and prototype throughout the design process.

  • Identify opportunities for design collaborations between product and feature groups – connecting dots for seamless system design.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of people management experience.

  • 8+ years or relevant experience in product design, a design consultancy, agency, or other environment where you’ve worked on multidisciplinary design teams.

  • Adept at synthesizing data and distilling complexity, with exceptional storytelling ability in multiple mediums.

  • Experience with implementing accessible, inclusive design.

  • Experience working at the intersection of social innovation, business, and interaction design.

  • Strong demonstrated fluency in the human-centered design process from qualitative research and synthesis to ideation, prototyping, and implementation.

  • A strong understanding and ability to articulate foundational UX laws.

  • Competent understanding of layout, typography, and color.

  • A passion for what design and innovation can do, especially where it can improve the lives of students and educators.

  • Experience in the education technology sector.

  • Exceptional cross functional partnership skills, with experience educating, partnering, and influencing product teams.

  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary, start-up team environment with demonstrable skill at sticking to commitments, delivering to dates, and moving quickly without rushing.

  • Ability to work independently under tight deadlines, while maintaining excellent communication.

  • Demonstrable skills in standard tools of the trade (e.g. Adobe CC, Figma, and other industry standard apps), showing fluency in UX/UI tools and the ability to convey concepts through videos, wireframes, flows, storyboards, and mockups, et al.

  • Current and up-to-date online portfolio.
