Microsoft Corporation Lease Mechanical Engineer in Redmond, Washington

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

The Lease Mechanical Engineer will be able to drive the design of all aspects of the physical networking infrastructure effectively and efficiently during design and address any design-related issues that arise during construction for all Microsoft datacenters/co-location facilities.The position is for a Subject Matter Expert who provides crucial input to other organizations and stakeholders. This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.

Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.

This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to (50)%.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include managing, reviewing, and coordinating the delivery of complex data center HVAC cooling systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems, and mechanical Building Automation System (BAS) controls. The candidate will ensure consultants adhere to Microsoft standards and perform technical reviews and analyses of leased and colocation data centers from external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements.

Design and Design Oversight:

The successful candidate will design electrical infrastructure for Lease DC project buildouts, special projects, and retrofit upgrades, addressing any issues during construction. They will assess existing facilities to ensure compliance with Microsoft standards. The role involves collaborating with partners, leading design work groups, and conducting cross-functional meetings for multiple projects.

  • Address existing condition investigations, communicate risk to relevant partners, and create mechanical scope of work to retrofit existing facilities to latest Microsoft standards.

  • Collaborate with internal and external customers and partners, utilizing tools and proper documentation for all team members to fully understand their role within the project. This collaboration aims to create or oversee the creation of datacenter telecommunication designs from an integrated Scope of Services and Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC). Candidate will also collaboratively manage the Construction Administration phase of the datacenter until handover for new Lease DC project build-outs, special projects, and network upgrades with other discipline leads.

  • Responsible for overseeing the specification and drawing development detailing all mechanical systems, and overall network topology and communication protocols required.

  • Assist the Operations teams with solutioning and work with Operations and equipment vendors for implementation.

  • Assist partner teams to review the mechanical infrastructure upgrading scope to raise site utilization and optimize energy efficiency.

  • Assist in commissioning validating performance, quality, and reliability.

  • Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors and suppliers.

  • Provide guidance to staff augmentation teams (which includes A/Es and A/E Consultants).

  • Be highly organized and able to oversee concurrent projects and focus under pressure.

  • Structured thinking and logic with very effective analytical skills.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field

  • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, OR related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred

  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.

  • Registered Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a lead engineer with design, construction, operation or maintenance of large scale and complex mechanical engineering systems (Data Centers, Micro Electronics are two examples of relevant industries)

  • Candidate possess effective written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and maintain high quality standards.

  • Good technical and practical working knowledge with respect to the understanding and applications of HVAC cooling systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems and mechanical Building Automation System (BAS) controls

  • Familiarity with CFD modelling

  • Sound knowledge of building codes and regulations.

  • Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large data center environments.

  • Knowledge of mechanical and control systems related to data center environments.

  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions.

  • Experience with using Bluebeam Revu and associated products.

  • Expertise with AutoCAD, and 3D BIM programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.

Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
