Burns & McDonnell Department Manager - Networks, Integration, Automation (MidAtlantic Region) in Raleigh, North Carolina
Description
This position is responsible for managerial direction, leadership, and development of the Network, Integration, & Automation (NIA) Department in the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global practice in the Mid-Atlantic Region. This position will provide leadership and direction to grow in the Department in a profitable manner based upon Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service.
This position will collaborate closely with several other managers within Mid-Atlantic Region and the global practice's leadership team including:
T&D Global Practice Manager - responsible for overall T&D business within the region.
T&D Operations Manager - responsible for internal department personnel, operations, and coordination with section and department manager(s) throughout the region.
T&D Projects Manager - responsible for overall business development and execution of T&D projects within the region.
NIA Managing Director - responsible for overall NIA strategy and direction across our national practice.
Peer T&D Department and Section managers - responsible for staffing, career development, and direct supervision of drafting, project support, and design resources throughout the company.
Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties assigned by senior management:
Fostering Culture
Lead by example, a dynamic department with a focus on creating an atmosphere and environment for all.

Advocate for safety within the business line and drive a culture focused on safety and compliance with company and site safety policies.
Encourage an innovation culture that challenges the norm and utilizes tools, technology, and processes to drive continuous improvement and efficiency.
Collaboration
Proactively share information with the local team, regional partners and national business line leadership.
Identify training needs, assist in the development of training and support the execution of training programs.
Set policies, procedures, and strategic goals for the department.
Perform an annual SWOT analysis of the department, along with other business strategy tools.
Working with GP leadership to create the annual NIA Business Plan.
Develop and maintain a strong relationship with national business line management, PMs, and other key leadership to support the development of our people and growth of the business.
Responsible for maintaining in-person intra-departmental collaboration across MAR offices.
Support the development and integration of a strong 'Burns and McDonnell India' team dedicated to the support of Mid-Atlantic Region Projects.
Recruiting, Interviewing, Hiring, Onboarding and Retention
Coordination of recruiting channels including HR Recruiting team, staff referrals, and direct candidate communication proactively the best college graduates and experienced engineers and designers available to ensure the candidates align with the MacCulture principles, department needs, growth strategies and business objectives.
Interview with intention, assess and hire prospective candidates while remaining diligent to uncover and combat unconscious bias throughout the entire interview process.
Responsible for the onboarding process for all the employee owners transitioning into NIA. This includes interns, new graduates, experienced hires, transfers and converted contract employees.
Support Human Resources and educational partnerships and internship programs.
Establish and employ measures that increase staff retention.
Career Development and Performance Management
Empower the department to pursue various career paths offered within T&D, and give them the tools to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities to pursue their desired career path.
Serve as a mentor and coach to the team you directly manage.
Advocate for staff by meeting regularly, listening to their short and long-term goals and providing guidance and direction assist in meeting those goals.
Organize, lead, and conduct the annual performance appraisal process for department staff.
Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement.
Responsible for QA/QC on NIA projects as needed to support Department staff.
Resource Management
Establish and proactively communicate the vision, expectations, requirements, processes, and guidelines to meet department, global practice, and company objectives to the staff.
Regularly review utilization of staff to make sure employees have a clear path of development, support and are adequately leveraged to their strengths and skillsets.
Oversight and management of chargeability and proper investment of overhead labor and costs.
Leading the coordination of work in the department which includes making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field. Minimum of seven (7) years related professional experience. Other qualifications include:
Registration as a professional engineer, or currently pursuing professional registration strongly preferred.
Proven leadership in developing and implementing vision that has brought positive impact.
Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully by example.
Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
Proven collaboration, facilitation and organization problem-solving skills in previous roles.
Demonstrated experience mentoring and team development.
Demonstrated experience in the pursuit and proposal process.
Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools include EcoSys, Microsoft Project, PowerBI, and other data modeling systems are preferred.
Demonstrated financial success on completed projects.
Demonstrated experience in client and business development.
Excellent facilitation, collaboration, organization, and critical thinking skills.
Excellent Planning and analytical skills.
Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise, and discernment.
Previous personnel management experience is preferred.
Compensation
$130,000.00-460,000.00 Annually
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
