Summary
CHS has an exciting opportunity in our Corporate Tax Group. We are seeking an Indirect Tax Principal to join our team. With ongoing systems implementations and process transformation efforts on top of the core compliance and business support accountabilities of the team, a resource with technical indirect tax expertise combined with extensive systems implementation and process transformation experience is needed to assist the Indirect Tax Manager in the execution of the team’s strategy to streamline the compliance process and to establish effective internal controls to minimize compliance risks by leveraging the company’s technology investments. This position will be responsible for all aspects of various indirect taxes in US and Canada including Motor Fuel, Sales and Use, and Agronomy taxes.
Responsibilities
Responsible for overall Fuels tax compliance process, including monthly tax return filings, notices/assessments, audits, refund claims, license applications/renewals, establishing internal control measures, and related process transformation efforts. Oversee outsourced compliance process for Sales Tax and Feed/Tonnage Taxes.
• Perform a monthly detail review of Fuel Tax returns and related GL reconciliations, journal entries, tax payment coding.
• Keep track and coordinate responses to notices, assessments, internal and external audits and refund claims. Document findings and escalate operational and financial risks involved through appropriate channels. Discuss issues with tax auditors/agents to come up with a resolution and/or negotiate results of audits and discrepancies as necessary.
• Work with the team to develop deeper understanding of the data, tax regulations and operational/financial impact. Assist in various systems implementation efforts, including tax rules configuration, testing, implementation, documentation, and ongoing maintenance.
• Work with Senior Manager to execute tax deliverables for the S4 implementation. Perform detail review of current tax determination and reporting in legacy systems and provide input for tax rules configuration and end-to-end compliance process for the project.
• Collaborate with team to develop and implement interim tools to standardize workpapers, improve internal controls and streamline the workflow for the current process using industry best practices. Provide support to business and operations teams on matters with indirect tax impact.
• Provide tax planning and advisory on new operational activities and mergers/acquisitions/divestitures. Reach out to external industry colleagues and/or tax consultants for advice if necessary.
• Ensure compliance with statutory laws and requirements. Document areas of non-compliance due to business operations. Communicate risks to the business and Tax Directors/CAO of potential impact and discuss risk mitigations.
Minimum Qualifications (required)
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or any Business-related discipline
• 10+ years experience in managing Indirect Tax compliance processes with expertise in multiple states for Motor Fuel Tax
Additional Qualifications
• 5+ years active role in Fuel tax systems implementation (i.e. Avalara, IGEN) and tax compliance process improvement projects
• Proficient in Excel with pivot tables and advance formulas
• Working knowledge of databases (i.e. MS Access or SQL) and ERP systems (i.e SAP, JDE)
• Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
• MBA, CPA, or equivalent work experience
• 10+ years experience working in a large multi-state corporation or consulting in indirect tax compliance with focus on Energy business, managing teams and concurrent multiple projects/engagements
• Delivers clear oral and written communications that meet the needs of different audiences
• Tackles new assignments with an aptitude to learn and figure things out using resources available
• Builds strong internal and external stakeholder relationships
• Effectively prioritizes in an environment with conflicting deadlines
• Works independently and takes ownership of projects with minimal supervision
• Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
• Understands and recognizes issues that have broader impact across the department and the organization

Actual pay offered will vary based on multiple factors which may include, without limitation, experience, education, training, specialized skills and certifications, minimum wage/salary requirements under local law.
