Available Title(s): 510I-YNCSNPS - Laboratory Technician 3 Business Title: Research Laboratory Technician 3 Employee Type: Classified Position Details: Summary of Duties: Incumbent will independently work under the direction of principal research investigator to perform complex laboratory procedures and technical scientific duties. Involves selection or modification of existing research techniques and databases, analyzing data using bioinformatics, interpreting scientific results, evaluating work performed by students, and maintaining the laboratory. Supervise undergraduate students and assist graduate students and post-doctoral associates in laboratory tasks, analysis and scientific writing. Job Duties: Lab Manager | 60% • Conducts laboratory investigations, experiments and/or research activities, and prepares analyses of findings using a variety of statistical methods. • Performs analyses of laboratory specimens (such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, electrophoreses and other genomic analyses) following established laboratory procedures and records results. • Consults with research project leaders in developing and implementing laboratory procedures to be used in conducting and evaluating laboratory research experiments. • Assists supervisor with special studies and training of other staff in sample preparation. • Uses computer terminal to process analyzed data. • Gathers, compiles and keeps current genotypic and phenotypic electronic database for the laboratory. • Prepares reagents, solutions and buffers for genomic tests. • Uses laboratory equipment, centrifuge, spectrophotometer, analytic balance, ph meters, autoclave; performs routine maintenance on research equipment and laboratory instruments. • Follows university procedures for bio-hazardous waste and chemical disposal. • Consults with project leaders in developing laboratory experiments. • Records and analyzes sample results. Records and Safety | 20% • Maintains IACUC records and files reports monthly. • Direct lab cleaning and maintain records of standard operating procedures, MSDS forms • Order and maintain laboratory supplies. • Monitors budget expenditures for assigned projects Supervision | 15% • Plans, schedules, assigns, coordinates and assists work of undergraduate students. • Approves subordinates bi-monthly time records. • Assists graduate students and post-doctoral associates as needed. • Performs lab safety orientation for lab members. • Ensures all team members complete required trainings. Other Duties | 5% • Performs other work as required Required Qualifications: • Five years of genetics/genomics laboratory experience including one year at a level equivalent to Laboratory Technician 1 or higher. College education involving major study in a laboratory science maybe substituted, year for year, for the required general experience. Completion of a course for laboratory assistants, approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, may be substituted for two years of the required general experience. • Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Sciences or a related field. Preferred Qualifications: • Demonstrated previous diverse experience in molecular biology and knowledge/practical uses of its research techniques. • Specific expertise in statistical analysis and bioinformatics is preferred but not required. • Demonstrated experience in scientific writing through peer-reviewed publications. • Demonstrated experience in teaching in laboratory methods and/or statistic
