Available Title(s): 570L-YNCSNPS - Plant Technician 3 Business Title: Plant Technician 3 Employee Type: Classified Position Details: Summary of Duties: This position serves as skilled technical support to the Agriculture and Maintenance Manager in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Plant Introduction Unit. Under the direction of the Manager, the person will perform professional-level work in support of the mission of the USDA Western Regional Plant Introduction Station, using advanced skills and knowledge to perform the following tasks: plan, prepare and maintain field plots using farm equipment; perform calibration of equipment and make pesticide and fertilizer recommendations and applications; do yearly equipment maintenance and repair; work outside to manage field plots through hand weeding, tillage and pesticide applications; help with harvest, threshing and seed cleaning; assist with building and grounds maintenance; and other duties as assigned. The person will also be responsible for maintaining electronic records using Microsoft office programs. This position must also be able to work and communicate with a diverse group of people including but not limited to curators, researchers, technicians, fellow support staff and students through email, verbal, and other forms of communication. Required Qualifications: • High school graduation or GED certificate; and four years of work experience in plant research, including one year in managing a major farming operation; OR equivalent education/experience. • Must have, or be able to obtain, a WSDA Public Operator's/Pesticide applicator's License at time of hire. • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with https://policies.wsu.edu/prf/index/manuals/safety-policies-procedures-manual/sppm-7-10/ and departmental driving standards. • Must have the ability to work in an outdoor environment for an entire work shift with exposure to hot and cold weather conditions. • One year supervisor experience. • Experience as a Technician in production and/or a research setting. • Proficient with a computer and related programs for work (Outlook, Word, Excel, & PowerPoint). Preferred Qualifications: • Associate Degree in related field. • Experience working with and knowledge of plant disease and soil nutrition symptoms. • Experience working with tools and equipment required for equipment fabrication and repair. • Experience with insects/pollinators. • Experience with operation and maintenance of farm machinery. Experience with Pesticide mixing and applications. • Experience with field irrigation.
