Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories CNC Machinist/Welder Fabricator in Pullman, Washington

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking both a skilled CNC Machinist and Welder Fabricator to join our Pullman, WA based Machining and Fabrication team. Machinists and Welder Fabricators of all experience levels are encouraged to apply. Experience level will determine job title.

CNC Machinist: In this position, you will not only be programming, setting up, operating, and inspecting parts for CNC mills and lathes but also have the opportunity to assist with team training and development and support continuous improvement projects. The SEL Machine Shop supports a wide range of internal customers, producing low- to high-complexity parts from materials that range from soft plastics, composites, hardened tool steel, and others, as requested. We are looking for a talented CNC Machinist with programming experience who fits the technical role and our SEL values as outlined in our Principles of Operation. The ideal candidate will be an excellent problem solver, self-driven to improve in their craft, and excited about learning a broad range of machining skills and technologies. This is a swing shift position, Monday to Friday, 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM.

Welder Fabricator: In this position, you will be responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC and manually operated fabrication equipment to produce and inspect a wide variety of sheet metal and other custom components. Welding is an essential part of this role so we are specifically looking for experienced welders that are proficient with MIG and TIG welding processes. Our ideal candidate has a solid understanding of welding theory and a basic understanding of welding metallurgy and nondestructive testing processes. Experience with aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, and titanium is preferred. In addition to technical skills set, we are looking for someone who models SEL values as outlined in our Principles of Operation. The ideal candidate will be an excellent problem solver, self-driven to improve in their craft, and willing to learn and teach a broad range of welding and fabrication skills and technologies. Day and swing shift positions are available.

As a CNC Machinist or Welder Fabricator, a typical day might include the following:

  • Using manual and CNC machining or fabrication equipment to produce parts of moderate complexity under limited supervision.

  • Performing preventive maintenance on shop equipment.

  • Creating basic to moderate CNC programs with a CAD/CAM system.

  • Providing design feedback and training to engineering and other staff on basic to moderate design projects.

  • Adhering to all shop safety procedures.

    This job might be for you if:

  • You have two years of trade school or equivalent experience

  • You have four years of machinist/welder fabricator experience

  • You can read and interpret moderate to complex blueprints

  • Machinist: You can write and read CNC programs in G&M code

  • Welder Fabricator: You are versed in welding theory and industry standards

  • You can create basic CAD/CAM programs

    Physical Requirements:

  • Lift and maneuver 40 pounds

  • Pull weight from high/low shelves

  • Reach

  • Bend

  • Grip

  • Twist

  • Sit and/or stand at least 8 hours

  • Fine finger dexterity

    Pay Range Data: New hires general start between $ 20.77 - $38.37 per hour. We base our starting pay offer on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills. Our ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location.
