Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Associate Research Engineer / Research Engineer - Electrical (Automation) in Pullman, Washington

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) Infrastructure Defense Division seeks a talented individual for an Associate to Engineer level position, focused on Electrical. The work we perform is some of the most fascinating, challenging, and rewarding that can be found in the engineering community.

Note: United States Citizenship is required.

As an Associate/Research Engineer, a typical day might include the following:

  • Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of electric power system automation and industrial control systems including related protocols, serial and network communications, security, and logic programming.

  • Perform Electromagnetic Transient modeling and/or perform Hardware-in-the-Loop testing.

  • Assisting engineers in researching and writing new ideas and functional specifications.

  • Assisting in designing, prototyping, and documenting technologies for applications in SEL products or solutions.

  • Assist in customer technical support including installation, commissioning and operation of automation and control systems.

  • Develop and analyze product specifications, functional tests, and validation tests.

  • Write and maintain product documentation including application guides, data sheets, and instruction manuals.

  • Provide technical and market analyses to evaluate proposed products or enhancements.

  • Perform analysis and tests on competing automation products.

    This job might be for you if:

  • Have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Have strong knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals.

  • Have knowledge of control systems and control system modeling.

  • Are familiar with the OSI model.

  • Are familiar with ethernet networking and serial communication.

  • Are willing to travel up to 25%.

  • Have strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of SEL products

  • Working knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 protocols

  • Working knowledge of electric power systems and protective relay applications

  • Experience in customer service or technical support

  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities

    Pay Range Data

We anticipate filling this position as an Associate Research Engineer $60,800 –$95,000 or Research Engineer $69,100 -$108,100.

We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the salary range may differ if filled at a different level. Our salary ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
