Liberty Latin America Associate Manager, Accounting in Puerto Rico
This position is based in San Juan, PR
What´s the role?
The Associate Manager, Accounting is responsible for all areas relating to accounting functions and financial reporting. This position will be responsible for daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly accounting tasks and activities. Is also expected to make recommendations to the Sr. Accounting Manager, Controller, for building and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. Directly supervises accounting personnel. This position needs to meet tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including journal entry preparation and balance sheet analysis.
How can you add value?
Deep understanding of the general ledger, balance sheet accounts, and SAP structure and functionality.
Support and assist to achieve an accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close. Ensure that all activities to support the month end close deadlines are met, including preparing journal entries, analyzing transactions and balance sheet accounts, and other transactions necessary to close the month.
Ensure the accuracy of balance sheet accounts that are under your responsibility as assigned for in Blackline, and review and approve as per Balance Sheet control expectations.
Analyze and explain the P&L accounts as the need arises by the Sr. Accounting Manager or Controller vs. prior month, prior periods, and rolls.
Review and analyze the accounting treatment of transactions to ensure it aligns with US GAAP reporting requirements. In addition, support the preparation of external reporting as the need arises by the Sr. Accounting Manager or Controller such as for the 10-Q’s, 10-K, & local statutory reports.
Provide advice and feedback to the Sr. Accounting Manager and Controller regarding any potential misstatement in the financial reporting or accounts and assist is resolving the issue.
Full knowledge of applications required for financial reporting, including the required SAP S4 ERP and the Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) applications and modules. Ability to analyze and understand the reporting information in HFM and its link to SAP S4.
Respond to inquiries from the Sr. Accounting Manager & Comptroller regarding financial results and other special reporting requests.
Responsible for analyzing, documenting, and explaining changes in revenue, expense, cash balances and balance sheet account trends and analyzing, documenting, and explaining variances to budget, including drivers.
Responsible for ensuring all segment necessary information is accurately processed and follows all statutory and regulatory requirements, including sales & use tax, volume of business tax, property taxes, franchise fees and copyright fees in conjunction with the tax department.
Supervise and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Lead role in development and implementation of new procedures and features to improve the workflow of the department.
Assist the Sr. Accounting Manager & Controller to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit.
Collaborate with other departments and finance personnel to obtain, verify, and record transaction report data and issues on a timely basis.
Advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
Work with direct reports to establish performance objectives for each year and supervise and advise on the progress to improve the professional development of staff.
Assist in budget and forecasting activities.
Collaborates with the other finance department staff to support overall department goals and objectives.
Provide training to new and existing staff as needed.
Handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
Support Sr. Accounting Manager & Controller with special projects and workflow process operational improvements.
Responsible for recording employees’ absences and tardiness and identify occurrences according to Attendance and Tardiness Policy.
Demonstrate and ensure compliance with the Customer First Philosophy, all Liberty Latin America's policies and procedures including the Code of Conduct and Liberty safety standards and procedures.
Other functions that may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervise and provide mentorship to a group of employees in the accounting department. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and advising work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
What do you need?
Education and/or Experience:
BA/BS in Accounting; CPA and/or Masters’ degree or equivalent experience in accounting preferred.
5-8 years prior supervisory experience in the accounting/financial reporting areas.
Other Qualifications:
Fully Bilingual (Spanish and English).
Big 4, SOX Experienced preferred.
Experience with large, automated accounting systems. Possess strong experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal, supervisory and customer service skills required.
Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, meet deadlines and be able to thrive in a dynamic work environment.
Exposure to and experience with PR and US tax systems.
Good analytical and financial planning skills.
Accounting and reporting knowledge – particularly in US GAAP.
