This is a Field Role so travel will be daily, nationally though predominantly in Lancashire and around the North West of England. Driving makes up 20-40% so a valid driving license is mandatory

About the role

Our Power & Cooling Engineers are at the heart of keeping BT’s networks operating 24/7 365 days a year. Utilising their expertise and knowledge in both Low and High Voltage systems, alarms, emergency lighting, cooling and UPS they ensure that the BT estate continues to work no matter the circumstances. Working with their experienced teams within our exchange buildings as well as other environments, including radio sites, rooftops and outdoors, they are required to support the variety of power systems and cooling equipment that ensures our networks keeping U.Ks internet working. Vital in supporting us in meeting strict SLAs they utilise their variety of skills, taking ownership of their patches and coaching those around them.

Key purpose of the role

As part of the role you will be required to contribute to out of hours callout by joining a Formal On Call Framework (commonly a 1 in 4 attendance with a varied requirement subject to local/geographical nuances) to support 24x7 service as needed by the business.

Requirements, including 14001 and 45001. Compliance with internal sign-off as/when required by our Power Environmental Specialists and Power Technical Support Group.

Role

Role Accountabilities:

• Low Voltage Power Expertise Utilising their expertise and knowledge in low power systems they repair, install and maintain low power circuits including lighting, transformers, UPS, generators etc., completing all work as allocated to support the assigned operational area and others as required using their qualifications in Power Systems. Works with the wider team to support area, regional and unit objectives.

• Cooling & Refrigeration Expertise Utilising their expertise and knowledge in cooling & refrigeration systems they install, maintain and repair chilling equipment including Adiabatic and F-Gas systems. They complete all work as allocated to support the assigned operational area and others as required using their qualifications in refrigeration systems. Works with the wider team to support area, regional and unit objectives.

· Mechanical Systems Expertise Utilising their expertise and knowledge in mechanical systems associated to LV & Chiller Plant. For example (not an exhaustive list): Fuel systems/air duct work etc. The full range of specific skills competency for the role of Power Engineer is detailed in the Field Engineering Skills Matrix/Training Pathways.

· Execute Work with Autonomy – Execute all required work (allocated and self-identified), considering H&S, despite the challenges and environment. Works proactively with Patch Managers and the wider team to work effectively and understand the priorities of the wider team / unit. Where required to prioritises and complete work, entering accurate codes and quality notes on appropriate systems (e.g. Eng.com, inventory systems), that are meaningful and which can be used onward by colleagues and customers.

· Performance and Development – Drives own performance ensuring they are effectively contributing to wider team measures, supporting in taking ownership of these measures for given area. Required to ensure that mandatory compliance, regulatory, data and informational requirements are maintained and recorded (including required training). Works in partnership with line manager to drive personal upskilling and development to meet training needs and aspiration. Additionally completes any training required and as set out by the business needs in that work area.

· Coaching, Leadership & Mentoring Skills Can lead in a supervisory role where required – e.g. Clerk of Works/Client Rep activity. Actively coaches/mentors other team members, including new joiners, to support best practice, quality standards and support delivery of new skills & technologies.

· Standards of Work – Ensures all work on equipment is in accordance with documented procedures and practices as provided by BT and its suppliers; agreeing any changes with appropriate source. Works with Patch and Regional Managers alongside customers and colleagues to ensure delivery is appropriate and aligns to objectives. Takes ownership of and effectively maintains tools, equipment and PPE ensuring quality and calibration. Additionally fosters a Continuous Improvement (CI) approach to all work across the team, personally contributing to driving performance by engaging to generate ideas, supporting in ownership of improvements, reporting issues and demonstrating actions taken to progress these improvements to completion.

· Responsibility & ownership of critical and urgent network repair/provision/maintenance activity.

· Execution of prioritised work items ensuring that this is aligned with the wider team and

unit’s priorities through co-ordination with patch managers and senior colleagues

· Risk assessment for health and safety

· Raising of issues / risks to more senior individuals to facilitate change

· Understanding of what is expected and proactively take opportunities to increase own skills to

support the team's work

· Raises opportunities to improve the process in work area and beyond

Individuals’ hold responsibility for monitoring, actioning and meeting all required compliance

(including health surveillance, such as rigging medical) if required. In addition to this they are

expected to be always fully presentable wearing provided corporate clothing for the role

Requirements;

Must be able to fulfil the physical requirements of the role i.e. able to bend, stretch, kneel and

crouch. Also must be able to climb, work at floor and ceiling level inside buildings, tower structures

and road side infrastructure, lift heavy drums/cables and recognise coloured wiring

Mandatory:

• Electrical competency City & Guilds 2360 parts 1+2 or equivalent NVQ

• BTEC Electrical Engineering Level 3/HNC/HND/MOET Level 3/ET Level 3

• 18th Edition Regs

• Inspection, Testing and Verification (C&G 2392-10)

Preferred experience/qualifications:

• Experience with Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)

• HVAC Refrigeration C&G/NVQ Level 3

• F-GAS category 1

• Demonstrable experience of repairing and maintaining Air Conditioning Split systems

• Experience of working with DC power systems

• Coaching/mentoring/supervisory experience

It is expected that an individual will be sufficiently experienced in all above criteria some duration

after assuming the role.

Experienced hires will be internally assessed on successful application to identify training

requirements.

Trainee/apprentice hires are required to become both experienced and, if applicable, qualified in all of the above criteria within their given duration of initial training.

Individuals will be required to hold a Full UK Driving Licence.

· ICT Literacy: Confident user of MS Office suite, especially MS Word, Excel and Outlook (e-mail);

· Team Work: Works well with and effectively supports wider team to understand patch and wider regional requirements and supports these effectively to meet wider CFU objectives. Measures: The role holder will be responsible for meeting any associated SLAs/KPIs for their given skillset/workstream. For example; major service outage repair SLA timescales, legal compliance targets & periodic maintenance activity.

Safety:

c) Ethics and compliance. As well as being aware of BT’s business principles, ‘The Way We Work’, and the BT Undertakings Code of Practice; the job holder will understand the regulatory, fair trading, competition, data protection and anti-corruption and bribery rules relating to their work sufficiently to be able to comply with them, relying on their own knowledge or on their ability to recognise when they will need specialist support.
