Senior Software Engineer - Python, SQL & Big Data

SpendingPulse provides economic insights to our customers including financial institutions, merchants, and governments. We analyze datasets with billions of transactions across geographies and sectors using Big Data technologies including Spark, Hive, and Impala. We are looking for an innovative data engineer who can design and build data pipelines, thriving in a fast-paced agile team. This individual will collaborate closely with our Data Science, Product Management, User Interface, and Data Warehouse teams, with team members in Prague, United States, and India. Every team member contributes to designing, building, and testing new features. The range of work you will encounter includes building new data pipelines, making data-driven decisions, creating data visualizations, and improving the reliability and performance of existing pipelines that run on our massive transaction dataset.

The SpendingPulse team is currently scaling the product globally, designing and building the infrastructure that will facilitate quality control and distribution of SpendingPulse results to consumers. As the product continues to expand, the team will add support for additional analytics, publish data on a more timely cadence, improve the automation of processes, and increase the robustness of the platform.

The SpendingPulse team is part of Mastercard's Data & Services organization. The Data & Services team is a key differentiator for Mastercard, providing the cutting-edge services that are used by some of the world's largest organizations to make multi-million dollar decisions. Focused on thinking big and scaling fast around, Data & Services is responsible for end-to-end solutions for a diverse global customer base. Centered on data-driven technologies and innovation, these services include payments-focused consulting, loyalty and marketing programs, Test & Learn experimentation, and risk management services.

Position Responsibilities

As a Senior Software Engineer in data pipeline team, you will:

Build scalable and maintainable data pipelines that allow us to expand SpendingPulse with new features and deliver insights from economic trends

Drive performance, reliability, and readability in our code base, allowing us to troubleshoot quickly and publish data consistently

Test your code and review code from other team members

Continuously innovate and determine new approaches, tools, techniques, and technologies to solve business problems

Partner with roles across the organization including consultants, engineering, and sales to determine the highest priority problems to solve

Collaborate across teams with exceptional peers who are passionate about what they do

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

Data engineering experience in an agile production environment

Proficiency with SQL, writing readable and well-tuned queries

Proficiency with Python. Understanding of object-oriented software design.

Familiarity Linux command line

Experience with big data technologies is a bonus

Clear communicator; Strong written and verbal English skills

Motivation, creativity, self-direction, and desire to thrive on small project teams

Ability to collaborate within the team across roles and communicate with teammates who have varying levels of technical understanding

Strong technologist eager to learn new tools and frameworks

Passion for analytical / quantitative problem solving

Eager to experiment with new team processes and innovate on development approaches
