GS-10: $75,211 - $97,770 GS-9: $68,297 - $88,786 GS-8: $61,835 - $80,383 GS-7: $55,836 - $72,588 Responsibilities You will serve as a Radiological Control Technician in a wide range of radiological control operations including complicated, demanding projects. You will serve as a major radiological control representative in "dry run" planning, practice, or "mock-up" session in preparation for major repairs and overhaul during refueling operations. You will take charge of response to radiation related emergencies and incidents until replaced by a senior radiological control supervisor or manager. You will assure adherence to radiological control requirements for assignments which involve numerous processes in several high-skill level trades. You will provide radiological controls for any of a wide variety of complicated repair operations involving primary systems, refueling evolutions including fuel transfer and other special projects as assigned. You will improvise plans, procedures, or equipment set-ups to meet unusual, occasionally recurring needs. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-10: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience appraising work procedures and recommending more efficient and safe methods for radiation/contamination related evolutions. Experience reviewing local radiological practices and procedures. Experience determining deficiencies in the actions taken by Radiological Control Technicians or other personnel. Experience making recommendations as to needed changes or additions in training, radiological procedures or work practices. GS-09: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience reviewing work procedures in the various high level trades and test procedures on radioactive systems for radiological implications. Experience demonstrating ability to determine the cause of serious incidents and solving radiological control problems that lower grade technicians cannot solve. Experience applying knowledge of potential radiological control casualty situations and of the appropriate corrective or mitigating action which must be taken. Experience providing the full range of radiological control service for a wide variety of operations in industrial or other work. GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience preventing and controlling incidents and accidents during compliance operations. Experience determining, directing, and controlling the activities of all personnel, disposition of effects of the emergency during potentially complex emergency situations. Experience applying knowledge of the function, nomenclature, location, and physical structure of naval nuclear propulsion plants in naval vessels and their support systems. Experience applying knowledge of physical and structural similarities and differences between propulsion plants and a practical knowledge of how plant systems and components interface with the remaining systems and components of the ship. GS-07: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying knowledge of a wide range of radiological control practices and requirements, and processes in several trades sufficient to monitor and control several phases of refueling and primary systems components replacement. Experience suggesting radiological improvement to local procedures and controlling complex incidents. Experience applying knowledge of the principles, theories, techniques, and methodologies for the surveillance of nuclear propulsion plant work processes, control of radioactive material, and control of radiation exposure and radioactive contamination. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: GS-10: NOT APPLICABLE GS-09: Master's degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree. GS-08: One and a half years of graduate education leading to a master's degree. GS-07: One full year of graduate level education. The work involves frequent, strenuous activities such as climbing vertical ladders, staging, or scaffolding in drydock and vessel areas; working in cramped quarters undergoing repair; and working in areas where footing may be insecure. Incumbent may carry items up to 50 pounds. The incumbent may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. The work of a radiological control technician involves performing operations on crane booms, on staging in drydocks and under adverse weather conditions. The stress of these kinds of environmental factors significantly increases the danger which exists in an environment of heavy industrial work. The incumbent must often persuade, influence, motivate, or gain compliance from others in implementing radiological safety requirements which may require resolution of work schedule conflicts. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
