SME Senior Safety Specialist in Plymouth, Michigan

As a Sr. Safety Specialist, you will not be limited to an office environment. Instead, you'll split your time in office working on policies, presentations and reports as well out travel to sites to support our professionals in the field.

The Opportunity: 

A Sr. Safety Specialist assists with tasks for our safety program, travel to sites to conduct field safety audits, hold safety meetings and trainings events and all things necessary to contribute to the success of the safety program, improvement of SME safety culture, and overall health and safety of all SME Team Members.  

Responsibilities: 

Coordinate/Schedule safety trainings, meetings, new hire orientations. Prepare training certificates and track staff trainings. Orientations and trainings will be presented to an audience and involve public speaking.  

  • Conduct field safety audits and travel overnight/out-of-state to SME offices. 
  • Prepare memos, notices, letters, reports and training materials and ensure it is properly communicated to employees 
  • Work alongside senior safety professionals and provide mentorship to employees, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment. 
  • Use your problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex safety challenges. 
  • Take meeting minutes in committee meetings, track staff training, accreditation refresher dates, and update safety auditing databases.  

Requirements: 

  • Has competency using computer operating systems and MS Office Suite programs (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). Preferred experience with reporting to safety auditing databases such as Avetta, ISNetworld, PEC Premier or similar.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with clients, team members, and supervisors, conveying technical information clearly. 
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, manage workloads, maintain accurate and detailed record-keeping skills, documenting field observations, safety concerns, and problem resolutions. 
  • Effective interpersonal skills to build rapport with clients and team members, fostering positive working relationships, customer-centric approach to provide excellent service to clients, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed promptly and professionally. 
  • Must be able to understand and adapt to change and react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions. 
  • Has a general aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field, utilizing critical thinking and logical reasoning. 
  • Demonstrates ethical conduct, maintaining confidentiality and ensuring safety and security in all aspects of work, strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines, fostering a safe working environment for yourself and others. 
  • Ability to handle physical demands, such as lifting (up to 50-lbs repetitively), walking on uneven ground frequently, and carrying equipment, working in various weather conditions, and traveling to different locations. 
  • Willingness to travel 40% of time. 

Education and Experience 

Bachelor's degree in related field (Occupational Safety, Behavior Safety, Industrial Hygiene, etc.) plus three years of safety experience.  

CST, OHST or CHST credential preferred. 

Knowledge of OSHA regulations and standards. (Completion of OSHA 510 and/or 511) 

Completion of OSHA 30 (1926-Construction preferred) 

Experience in recognizing compliance and risk issues and situations. 

Knowledge of safety and health management system
