Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Upholds and models the mission and values of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital - Plymouth and the philosophy of Nursing/Patient Care Services.

  • Develops and implements departmental goals and objectives, and participates in the development and implementation of organizational goals, objectives, policies and procedures in concert with the organization’s mission and vision.

  • Participates as an active member in nursing leadership and clinical committees.

  • Provides leadership and direction for nursing projects and hospital-wide initiatives.

  • Ensures on-going compliance with professional standards consistent with current institutional and national practice standards and all other regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures that all patients receive a safe and optimal level of care and that the delivery of patient care is evaluated on an ongoing basis.

  • Makes regular visits to all assigned areas to observe the delivery of care and interact with leadership of the unit, patients, and staff.

  • Works in collaboration with Nursing Leadership group to ensure the availability of clinical experts and education tools for the purpose of providing staff with education and resources.

  • Collaborates with nursing leaders and provides oversight for departmental Performance Improvement (PI) program for reporting departments. Contributes to the Hospital PI program as requested.

  • Develops and implements systems, models and programs to ensure the delivery of quality patient care, evidence-based practice and the attainment of desired patient outcomes.

  • Develops and implements innovative and effective clinical service models that yield positive patient outcomes and high levels of productivity.

  • Takes a leadership role in ensuring the development and implementation of a comprehensive nursing recruitment and retention program that minimizes staff vacancies and turnover by fostering a positive professional culture

  • Establishes effective means of feedback and communication with all staff.

  • Mentors and develops nursing leadership staff, and appropriately delegate to assigned staff, empowers and motivates others.

  • Ensures the consistent and timely application of competency-based staff evaluations.

  • Actively promotes and encourages continuing education and professional development for all staff.

  • Establishes formal and informal mechanisms to recognize the achievements of all nursing staff.

  • In collaboration with the VP/CNO, develops annual operating and capital budgets for assigned area and effectively uses productivity measurements.

  • Understands the personnel and capital resource needs for assigned services and stays abreast of emerging trends and the needs of patient populations served.

  • Assures the on-going monitoring of operating and capital budgets for all assigned areas, justifying any budget variances on a regular basis.

  • Develops resource plans for assigned services that provide adequate staff to respond to case volume/mix, deliver quality care, achieve patient outcomes and attain financial goals.

  • Actively participates in departmental and organization-wide committees and meetings, representing the interests of nursing and the organization as a whole.

  • Works collaboratively with members of the Medical Staff and other departments to assure the appropriate utilization of resources, the implementation of ongoing quality improvement initiatives and the efficient flow of patients through the organization.

  • Actively participates in the strategic planning process of the organization and demonstrates the ability to achieve service and organization-wide objectives.

  • Engages staff and others in decisions and promotes patient centered decisions.

  • Fosters and role models collaborative practice and team work between nursing staff, administration, other departments and medical staff throughout the organization.

  • Establishes mechanisms for effective communication among all levels of nursing staff, and between nursing staff and other departments/disciplines.

  • Develops strong working relationships with physicians and other disciplines which are based on mutual respect and trust.

  • Employs effective problem solving and conflict resolution techniques within nursing and throughout the organization.

  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and is able to understand and incorporate the views and perspectives of others.

  • Communicates position clearly and effectively with all levels of the organization and is able to understand and incorporate the views and perspectives of others.

  • Participates in professional nursing organizations, continuing education programs and other professional activities to remain current and foster professional collaboration.

  • Collaborates with nursing faculty and educational institutions as well as colleagues within the BIDMC system to support nursing education program within the organization and the community.

Requirements/Skills

  • A registered nurse eligible for licensure in the State of Massachusetts.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and a Master’s degree in nursing, healthcare administration, business, or a related field or in pursuit of Master’s degree.

  • Ten years nursing experience with a minimum of five years progressive nursing leadership experience at the director level in a similar sized organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop an effective management team; to mentor and coach first-line managers and to delegate appropriately to achieve departmental goals and objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish a culture that recruits retains and supports staff as evidenced by staff satisfaction results. Must have strong motivational skills and the ability to engage and empower others.

  • A credible manager and leader with strong operations experience and an appreciation for the complexities associated with departmental-wide problem solving.

  • Experience with, and a genuine commitment to, a professional practice culture of accountability focused on excellent performance in customer service, patient satisfaction, and patient safety.

  • An effective communicator exemplified by timely follow-up, meeting participation, effective negotiating skills, the ability to summarize and frame issues, discussions, conclusions, and develop effective communication plans.

  • Fiscal competency demonstrated by the development of annual budgets reflecting staffing, capital, and other operating expenses.

  • A self-directed individual who recognizes and values the inter-dependencies of roles, functions, and processes necessary for success.

  • A solid track record of identifying and solving problems at all levels of the organization in a non-threatening and creative manner.

  • An individual with executive presence and public speaking skills, and the ability to effectively represent the nursing department throughout the organization and the community.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

Registration/Certification

  • Licensure as a professional nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
