Description
The Surgical and Procedural Services Educator assumes the continuous responsibility for clinical leadership in regard to staff education, assessment of competency, participation in clinical management of patients to demonstrate practice, assist with new technology, develop procedures and policy and assume a partnering role with nursing management in performance improvement initiatives. The Educator is responsible for participating in the unit’s quality program, determining the effectiveness of patient care strategies, and connecting those results back to the staff by initiating education and/or necessary changes in practice to both achieve and maintain excellent patient care and clinical outcomes.
Surgical and Procedural Services includes Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Pre-op, Pre-Anesthesia testing (PAT), Central Sterile Reprocessing, Endoscopy, Pain management and Interventional Radiology Nursing.
Essential Duties and responsibilities
Demonstrates clinical expertise across specialty areas.
Demonstrates sound judgment and critical thinking skills including advanced leadership skills during emergency or crisis situations.
Serves as educator of clinical practice, and supporter of staff professional development and personal growth.
Participates in delegations of patient care assignments reflecting the learning needs of the staff and staff competency to meet patient needs.
Participates and makes recommendations in the selection of new hires and transfers based upon qualifications and abilities necessary to meet patient needs.
Collects and assesses monthly quality data to evaluate, discuss and recommend Performance Improvement initiatives in conjunction with the Nurse Director and care team.
Serves as a resource to all staff and management in planning and providing educational programs.
Assists in the growth of staff in developing them as preceptors and mentors.
Plans, presents and evaluates orientation, in-service and continuing education programs.
Acts as liaison with Staff Education Department assisting with the development, recommendation and implementation of policies, procedures, and new initiatives/roll-outs.
Assists and collaborates with Director regarding staff performance by making competency determinations and giving recommendations/input for yearly staff evaluations.
Works collaboratively with care team members to maintain unit efficiency and patient care excellence.

Collaborates with Surgical Services Leadership Group to develop and implement a strategic educational plan based on learning needs assessment
Collaborates with Surgical Services Leadership Group to assist with onboarding of new physicians
Experience/Knowledge/Skills Required
5 years experience in clinical specialty area
Minimum 2 years charge experience
Demonstrates sound judgment and critical thinking skills including advanced leadership skills during emergency or crisis situations
Served as successful preceptor and mentor
Willingness to work flexible hours to meet education needs of the surgical and procedural services departments
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Masters Degree Preparation
AORNPerioperative 101 Course Instructor - preferred
Excellent computer skills (Email, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)
Excellent customer service skills
Education required
Current Mass RN License
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Masters Degree Preparation
Certification in Specialty Area of the nursing unit or other related experience preferred
BLS and ACLS
Proficiency in Unit Based Competencies
