Unit Description:

9 North at UPMC Presbyterian Montefiore is a 25-bed surgical unit specializing in orthopedic and urological care. It provides treatment for patients with orthopedic trauma, spinal injuries, upper extremity conditions, and various urological conditions.

Position Description:

The Unit Director is accountable for leading and managing their area to ensure exceptional patient and employee experiences. This includes improving patient care quality, fostering a healthy workplace, and overseeing clinical, administrative, and business functions. Responsibilities include collaborating with medical staff on patient outcomes, setting clinical priorities, supporting shared governance, implementing safety improvements, and promoting professional development. The Unit Director also oversees staffing, orientation, performance management, employee evaluations, and department budgeting.

Responsibilities:

  • The Unit Director collaborates with medical staff to monitor patient outcomes, set clinical priorities, and implement safety initiatives.

  • They use quality data, research, and evidence-based practices to drive improvements and share insights across units.

  • The director fosters positive communication, manages conflict, and supports staff engagement in quality initiatives.

  • They create a shared vision for the department, involving staff and stakeholders in change processes.

  • Promoting patient-centered care, the director ensures adherence to clinical standards and best practices while managing resources efficiently.

  • They lead staff development, support innovation in education and certification, and mentor clinicians in leadership.

  • Additionally, they oversee the competency assessment of direct care providers.

  • A minimum of 4 years of nursing and progressive leadership experience is required.

  • A BS/BSN is required at the time of hire, with a Master's degree/MSN also required. If the bachelor’s degree is not in nursing, a Master’s or higher degree in Nursing is required. If the Master's degree is not in nursing, a BSN is required. If the MSN is not completed at the time of hire, the individual must be enrolled in a Master's or MSN program within one year and complete it within three years. They should possess an understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan and be able to assess patient data, interpret relevant information, and identify age-specific care needs according to department policies and procedures.

  • Strong analytical skills are needed to evaluate staff, address clinical issues, and devise solutions to complex problems.

  • The candidate must have leadership abilities to develop staff, set and maintain performance standards aligned with national nursing practices, and comply with administrative requirements.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to build relationships that foster a healing environment with patients, families, staff, physicians, and senior management, both verbally and in writing.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Act 34

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
