The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) at Carnegie Mellon University has an open position for a Senior Robotics Technician. We are looking for an experienced robotics technician with demonstrated abilities in robotics, electronics, metalworking, welding, hydraulics, pneumatics and machine repair. Must have experience in support of electro/mechanical product development. You will be responsible for the independent operation, maintenance, repair and modification of a wide variety of complex robotic systems. You will also be responsible for the setup and operation of experimental equipment and systems used in research projects. Duties may also include planning and supporting field logistics and training of field personnel. History of safe field operations is critical. Must have experience in support of creating project system requirements, traceability and evaluation. Field tests will on occasion require travel, nighttime, weekend and long hours.
Your primary responsibilities include: Properly perform all phases of assembly, set-up, operation and repair of complex electro-mechanical equipment. Maintain and operate a wide variety of control, measuring and recording equipment used to test and evaluate electronic and mechanical systems. Following supervisory instruction and based on blueprints and diagrams, may layout and construct or modify equipment to be used in projects funded by commercial/industrial organization as well as the U.S. Department of Defense. May operate machine tools to fabricate non-procurable items to construct equipment. Setup and operate equipment necessary for testing, monitoring and recording the evaluation of robotic systems. Mobility Requirements: Very active job that requires standing at most times. Frequently requires bending, stretching, pushing as well as lifting of components or equipment. Must be able to maneuver in cramped areas while performing minor repairs to equipment Environmental Conditions: Work is performed both inside a fabrication facility as well as outdoors in all weather conditions. Air conditioning is rarely available in the work settings. May be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, etc. as well as exposed to noise and dust in shops. Must be familiar with the use and maintenance of safety equipment. Equipment operated has various moving parts and must be operated following all safety procedures. Required Qualifications: Associate's Degree or Trade School is required 10 or more years of combined experience in electronic and mechanical technical areas is required Experience with system operations and troubleshooting. Able to read blue prints, schematics, mechanical drawings and other job specifications. Able to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records. Required to have reasoning and problem solving skill as well as excellent communication skills. Ability to take on a multi-disciplinary role as a member of a cross-departmental project team. Ability to interact effectively and courteously with a wide variety of people both within and outside of the university. Working knowledge of electro-mechanical devices. Working knowledge of electro-mechanical assembly and test equipment. Familiar with the use of various hand tools in the assembly and maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment including soldering equipment. Able to use basic machine shop equipment (sheet metal, drill, mill, lathe, grinders, welders). Familiar with rigging equipment and methods. Excellent on-site problem solving skills. Ability to pay close attention to detail, meeting flexible deadlines, work under pressure and work with frequent interruptions. Must have the ability to work on several tasks simultaneously; ability to pay strict attention to research protocol; ability to remain calm and composed when dealing with difficult situations or people. Strong oral c mmunication skills. Basic computer skills including directory management, email and word processing. Familiarity with 3D computer aided design tools, especially SolidWorks, is desirable. Ability to safely operate large vehicles.
Note: The position may require weekend and evening hours. Applicants must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident and hold a valid driver's license. Some travel and overnight stay may be required.
