Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position involves heavy physical effort along with the knowledge of and ability to perform the many manual tasks necessary to maintain and operate an international airport.

Here is how the Laborer will help:  

  • Develop or participate in the job safety analysis procedures.
  • Mix and pour concrete, asphalt and hot mix to fill and repair holes in damaged sections of roads, airfield ramps, runways, taxiways and parking areas.
  • Use a jackhammer to break pavement.
  • Paint taxiways, runways, ramp areas, roadways, sidewalks, curbs, and all pavement markings.
  • Cut grass, cut trees with an ax or chain saw, perform seeding, fertilizing, spraying, pruning, planting, watering, weeding, mulching, and landscape construction.
  • Empty all trash receptacles outside the building complex, litter control of all airport property, cleaning of all work areas, sidewalk cleaning - help operators with sand clean-up on ramp and field.
  • Remove snow on all sidewalks and steps - assist with the drivers on plow trucks and runway sanders.
  • Dig holes and trenches with pick and shovel where dirt may be hard and compact.
  • Assist the Building Trades by moving all needed materials to and from the worksite, assisting as the ground person when needed, , providing assistance and removal of trash,  provide assistance with demolition , assist when pulling wire or cable, provide assistance with escort compliance as needed, clean areas and work sites as assigned.
  • Maintenance of water conveyance systems.
  • Performs other related work as assigned or directed.

Qualifications

 The following requirementslist the *minimum** education/training/experience required to qualify for this job. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted.

Requirements to apply for role of Laborer are:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid PA Class "C" Driver's (CDL preferred) License and pass the airfield driver's test within 30 days.
  • Must provide his/her own personal protective footwear (Safety shoes).
  • Must achieve ICS 100 & 700 certification within 30 days.
  • Must adhere to ACAA guidelines set forth by the Department of Maintenance Dress Code and Personal Protective Equipment Policy.
  • A pesticide and/or weed applicator's license is beneficial.

We also expect that candidates will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities in most cases:  

  • Extensive working knowledge of FAA Ground Control radio procedures.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and techniques of safety precautions and injury prevention programs.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of responsibility and awareness for the safety practices and standards of a general aviation airport in all tasks assigned to a laborer.
  • Must abide by all ACAA safety guidelines.
  • Must be able to wear and use PPE (personal protective equipment) as required.
  • Able to work in confined spaces.
  • Serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of the Authority's Ethics Policy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.  Reach with hands and arms and talk and hear.  The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch or crawl, climb, balance and kneel.   Considerable ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.   Hearing ability must meet the standards / levels, as required by the Department of Transportation guidelines.   

CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, aircraft, heavy equipment and vehicles. The employee may be required to work in outside weather conditions exposed to lights, noises, fuels and chemicals associated with aircraft and heavy equipment, and to all types of weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is frequently very loud.   Employee may be assigned to additional shifts, which encompass a twenty-four hour day, seven day per week operation, including holidays.  Subject to remain on duty beyond assigned working hours to provide assistance during emergency situations, peak periods or extenuating circumstances.
