We are seeking a Sr Payroll and Benefits Specialist to join our team in the Phoenix, AZ area. This role offers the flexibility of working remotely from your home office. In this role, you will provide comprehensive payroll operations and benefits administration for our California workforce, ensuring precision, compliance, and operational excellence across multiple platforms. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of our compensation and benefits systems while providing strategic guidance on payroll and benefits policy compliance.

The Role

  • Administer end-to-end payroll processing via Paylocity, ADP, and proprietary systems

  • Manage complex compensation structures including piece work calculations and prevailing wage requirements

  • Process bi-weekly and special payrolls while maintaining strict deadlines and accuracy standards

  • Maintain thorough knowledge of California-specific requirements including meal breaks, rest periods, and overtime calculations

  • Calculate retroactive payments and adjustments as needed

  • Serve as primary point of contact for payroll-related inquiries from employees and management

  • Provide guidance on payroll policies and procedures to staff and department heads

  • Partner with HR team on compensation-related projects and initiatives

  • Participate in the full-cycle benefits administration including open enrollment, new hire enrollment, and qualifying life events

  • Process benefit enrollments, changes, and terminations in HRIS systems

  • Reconcile monthly carrier invoices and resolve discrepancies

  • Conduct benefits orientation sessions for new employees

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for employee benefits inquiries

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure accuracy and compliance

  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive payroll and benefit information

  • Generate various payroll and benefit reports

Requirements

  • 5+ years payroll and benefits administration experience required, 3+ years processing California payroll

  • CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification a plus

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or equivalent a plus

  • Experience with California wage legislation and benefits compliance

  • Advanced Excel skills

  • Strong project management skills

  • Excellence in written and verbal communication

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion

  • Experience with HRIS systems and time/attendance platforms

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills

  • Occasional travel to other office locations may be required (10-25% annually)

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Passing of all pre-employment requirements (MVR, Background Check, Drug Screen)
