Charles Schwab Senior Datacom and Database Engineer in Phoenix, Arizona

This senior engineer position will provide technical leadership as a member of the Platform Services Mainframe Database Technologies Team. As a Senior Datacom and Database Engineer you’ll contribute to all matters related to Datacom infrastructure systems to ensure successful deployment and operation. You’ll have an opportunity to change organizational behaviors and influence key stakeholders through partnering and consulting with other Mainframe Database Technologists, System Programmers, Application Developers, and Principals.

The Senior Datacom and Database Engineer will support the Schwab Datacom Mainframe system environments which includes installing and upgrading the Datacom Software, monitoring the environment, and assisting Application Developers with questions, problem resolution, and performance tuning. Production systems must perform optimally, scale, and be responsive particularly during (Stock) Market and after Market hours to support Trading activity.

Since Datacom has a continuous improvement model, it enables you to determine when and how to introduce new technological features into the environment. The team is small so coordinating what needs to be done is straightforward and planned within to align deliverables with the Platform Services organization’s initiatives.

Moreover, you’ll be able to demonstrate and apply your subject matter expertise to manage, optimize, and scale the Datacom environment while developing your career through an IDP, Soft Skills, and ongoing exposure to Agile, Db2, CI/CD, DevOps.

What you have

  • 5+ years in Datacom Technology performing Datacom DBA and/or Database Engineering duties. To include knowledge of Mainframe internals like SMP/E, TSO/E, ISPF/PDF, JCL, z/OS Utilities, etc.

  • Effective problem determination and resolution skills

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills with the ability to influence

  • Demonstrated change management skills

  • Demonstrated small team leadership skills and mentoring skills

  • Ability to multi-task, work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment, and demonstrated ability to provide quality client support

  • Experience with Agile Practices and Agile Service Management a plus

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred

  • Develops and documents detailed standards (e.g., guidelines, processes, procedures) for the introduction and maintenance of services

  • Debug system software problems and communicate with vendors to resolve these problems.

  • Take lead during incidents and drive incident management effort to restore service and lead postmortem discussions and actions.

  • Plan, test & implement Datacom software updates, migrations and other Datacom maintenance activities.

  • Support the career growth of junior members by providing technical guidance & mentoring.

  • Participate in disaster recovery testing scenarios along with Production on call support (24x7).

  • Utilize Agile Framework to manage tasks and your workload

  • Working knowledge of Datacom/DB architecture.

  • DataDictionary – Maintain Datacom object definitions includes adding, changing, updating, and retiring objects:

  • Database, Areas, Tables, Keys, and Elements.

  • DataDictionary maintenance via online (DDOL) and/or batch.

  • DataDictionary Utilities, DDBTGLM, DDUPDATE, DDRMFLM, and VLS files.

  • Working knowledge of change impact and doing impact assessments – steps that must be completed after a changes to the dictionary are made.

  • Understanding Copybooks and how they can be defined and used in a COBOL environment.

  • Define and mange Multi-User Facility (MUF). MUF best practices, Status, and start-up options to tune and tailor the environment for peak performance including monitoring buffer and zIIP performance. Understanding the role and management of the Shadow MUF.

  • CXX – Datacom catalog that stores definitions of all databases and tables.

  • Logging and Recovery, understand the LXX, the active log and the RXX the archive log and how to use them for forward and backward recovery.

  • Understanding of the Dynamic System tables and how to query them via SQL queries.

  • DB Utility DBUTLTY used to produce CXX reports, manage backup and recovery, perform 24x7 tools for on-line-area-moves (OAM), online reorgs of data, TM24 to move and reorganize data and remain on-line, TM24 used to add or remove data compressions without taking table offline.

  • Understanding of Datacom Accounting tables and how to review data to assist programmers with tuning programs or problem solving.

  • URTs – User Requirements Tables role in batch and on-line access.

  • Understanding of basic problem solving, evaluating error conditions, and problem resolution

  • Working knowledge/understanding of new Datacom enhancements for partitioning large tables, converting BDAM datasets to Linear VSAM to improve performance and resource usage, and using online area move to re-allocate datasets without taking them offline.

  • CICS Service Facility

  • Basic understanding of module DBCVTPR and its assembly

  • Monitoring throughput via Sysview – this can be learned.

  • Reviewing CICS output for problem solving and resolution.

  • Inter-Product Components (IPC)

  • Basic understanding of IPC.

  • Programmer and Datacom System Support

  • Ability to review customer requests and/or assistance with problem solving. Review failed job and assist with providing corrective measures.

  • Ability to assist with tuning application code or assist with reducing run time for long running batch jobs.

  • Mainframe Knowledge/Skills

  • Working knowledge of JCL to run batch jobs, allocate and manage Datacom datasets, output files, etc.

  • Ability to review job output to help resolve error conditions or problems.

  • Understand DASD management for the Datacom environments.

  • Knowledge of REXX and STAR Too is helpful but not required.

  • Understanding the mainframe UNIX/Linux Shell and crontabs to run system reports helpful.

  • Db2 Knowledge/Skills

  • Basic understanding of Db2 z/OS from a DBA perspective.

  • Working knowledge of IBM Db2 utilities

  • Working knowledge of SQL

  • Basic understanding of application performance in a Db2 environment
