The Opportunity

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director, Category Management to join USAA’s transformative Sourcing and Procurement organization. In this pivotal role, you will lead the maturation of category management practices, drive the strategic planning and execution of strategic categories, ensuring optimal performance and alignment with market trends. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including revenue generating business partners, sourcing/procurement, vendor management, third party risk management, risk/compliance, and finance to drive category growth, effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in category management, exceptional analytical skills, a proven track record of leading successful category strategies, and demonstrated passion for leading teams to successful outcomes. We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Charlotte, NC, or Tampa, FL. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

  • Mentors, coaches, and monitors efforts of less experienced category managers and provides feedback to enable success.

  • Sets goals for performance and deadlines to achieve operational goals and communicates them to subordinates.

  • Monitors sourcing activities of subordinates, and provides ongoing sourcing guidance.

  • Understands financial service industries regulatory requirements and provide recommendations to align to business strategy through subordinate employees.

  • Builds short-ter, project plans and leads change in an agile environment to ensure achievement of the category strategy -- development and execution of guidelines / guardrails, change and communication plans, processes, procedures, training, etc.

  • Monitors relationships of team with business leaders, enterprise stakeholders, operational partners (centralized sourcing and procurement, legal, compliance, finance), and strategic suppliers.

  • Maintains oversight of complex categories; facilitate escalation and collaborative resolution of all issues impacting suppliers’ execution of category strategy.

  • Leverages technical, market, and competitive expertise to identify viable third-party solutions, evaluate total cost of ownership, lead or support contract negotiations, develop critical performance measures, assess compliance with third-party risk standards, monitor adherence to contractual terms, etc.

  • Consistently monitors and evaluates categories of subordinates to identify potential category solutions enabling delivery of products and services to members.

  • Actively monitors and manages aggregate supplier spend data within assigned spend category.

  • Manages demand activities for team categories and is accountable for the work of unit staff.

  • Drives continuous improvement for team and categories under management.

  • Monitors employee productivity and provides constructive feedback and coaching.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • 4 additional years of related experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted in lieu of a degree

  • 8 years of experience leading the strategy for the sourcing of a specific Commodity/Category Management and experience in owning the advancement of the strategy for augmented business needs

  • 3 or more years of direct team lead or management experience required

  • Experience with relevant data management tools

  • Strong presence with the ability to collaborate and lead through transformational change

  • Deep understanding of supplier portfolio management with equally strong skills in selection and auditing of suppliers

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in strategic, tactical contractual negotiations and dispute resolution and client relationship management

  • Analytical skills with the ability to synthesize data and formulate insights in support of specified category(s)

  • Strong communication skills with proven ability to influence and drive solutions across all organizational levels

  • Leadership experience in negotiations strategies and oversight of Procurement programs for a wide variety of products and services

  • Strong presence with the ability to collaborate and lead through transformational change

  • Demonstrated experience managing a complex team of professionals within the past 12 months.

  • Deep knowledge on the management of third party people, process, technology, and information.

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $109,130 - $208,580.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
