Indian Health Service Custodial Worker in Phoenix, Arizona
Summary The Custodial Worker is located at the Housekeeping Service Phoenix Indian Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The work involves tasks that requires knowledge and application of specialized cleaning procedures for the Intensive Care Unit, Central Supply, and Emergency Room area and provides housekeeping services to all functional components except the Operating Room area and the Obstetric Ward and Delivery Room. This position will report to the Housekeeping Officer. Responsibilities Determines and selects proper cleaning procedures to use depending on the type of obstetrics delivery or surgical (case) and selects and assembles materials and supplies needed for cleaning. Performs the following typical, but not all-inclusive, cleaning tasks necessary to carry out plans and schedules defined for designated areas. Moves all portable equipment in the operating room as necessary, being certain to roll all wheels through the germicidal solution. Scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors, dust, wash walls, and windows. Strips, waxes and polishes floors using heavy industrial type cleaning equipment including offices, conference rooms, showers, utility closets, storage areas, and nurse stations. Competencies/Abilities Rated: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints). Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Dexterity and safety. Work practices (includes keeping neat, clean and in order). Physical Effort: Moderate physical effort is required continuously in performance of manual cleaning tasks. Walking, standing long periods, requires bending, lifting, pushing, and climbing. There are occasional short periods of more physical effort when moving furniture and lifting of items over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is done inside with adequate lighting, ventilation and occasionally outside when washing of windows, and outdoor clinics. Will be exposed to some mechanical hazards, some moving objects, crowded rooms/areas, and wet slippery floor surfaces, and icy streets. Will be subject to chapped hands from working with detergents and water. Subject to danger from cuts, bruises, and minor shocks from working with power machines. Subject to exposure to diseases being treated in the hospital, as well as blood and other bodily fluids. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. This position has no promotion potential.
