Labor & Delivery/PETU/APU- 3 Preston/3Cathcart

The Labor & Delivery, PETU and APU Units at Pennsylvania Hospital provide holistic, family centered services to the childbearing population of the Tri-state area including Central and Southern New Jersey, Northern Delaware and the Greater Philadelphia area and its suburbs.

Labor & Delivery (L&D) is a Level III, tertiary care facility, located on the third floor of the Preston Building, which provides the following services:

  • Management of the uncomplicated pregnancy in the labor, delivery and recovery period

  • Management of the complicated pregnancy in the labor, delivery and recovery period

  • Operative procedures of pregnancy including cesarean section, cesarean hysterectomy, fallopian tubal ligation, and dilatation & curettage (D&E)

  • Antenatal testing including biophysical profile (BPP), non-stress test (NST), amniotic fluid volume indexing (AFI), and ultrasound

  • Interruption of pregnancy for genetic indications via cerclage removal, dilatation & evacuation, and prostaglandin induction.

The Perinatal Evaluation and Treatment Unit (PETU) is a Level III, tertiary care facility located on the third floor of the Preston Building, which provides the following services:

  • Triage, evaluation and treatment of pregnancy complications occurring from 13 to 42 weeks of gestation

  • Antenatal testing including biophysical profile (BPP), non-stress test (NST), amniotic fluid volume indexing (AFI), and ultrasound

  • Evaluation and treatment of preeclampsia occurring after discharge from postpartum, within the first two weeks following delivery.

The Antepartum Unit (APU) is a Level III, tertiary care facility located on the third floor of the Preston Building, which provides the following services:

  • Treatment of pregnancy complications occurring in the 5th to 42nd week of gestation

  • Antenatal testing includes biophysical profile (BPP), non-stress test (NST), contraction stress test (CST), Oxytocin challenge test, amniotic fluid volume indexing (AFI), and ultrasound

  • Treatment of pregnancy complications occurring after discharge from postpartum, generally in the first two weeks following delivery

  • Cervical ripening in preparation for the induction of labor

  • Post partum patients experiencing fetal or neonatal loss.

  • The Surgical Technologist II, Women's Health, is a Technologist that practices as a fully oriented/trainer partner on the health care team and consistently demonstrates safe practice within the organizational professional practice model.

  • Clinical Leadership: The Technologist effectively collaborates and applies innovative, systems thinking to engage in systematic, evidence-based problem solving, decision making to promote effective changes, supports the development of others, and creates a practice climate of responsiveness and learning. This area involves both outside the department, inside the department, and our students.

  • Clinical Scholarship: The Technologist evaluates and integrates best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient and family preferences and values for the delivery of optimal health care and system effectiveness. Demonstrates critical thinking and response-based practice.

  • The Surgical Technologist II demonstrates the ability to collaborate with the care team throughout all Women's Health Units to provide the safest care to our patients and meets the standards of their clinical level as outlined in the CARE program document.

Responsibilities:

  • The Surgical Technologist II is an active member of a committee. The Technologist demonstrates how its practice impacts the organizational vision, mission, and goals and the care delivery system. The Technologist complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies.

  • The Surgical Technologist II independently provides patient care through the application of the department specific processes and accepts accountability for the care of assigned patients. Assigned patients may range in age from infancy to the elderly.

  • The Surgical Technologist II demonstrates within the competency domains of Clinical judgment & decision making, employee-client relationship, clinical leadership and clinical scholarship as outlined in the CARE program document.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver safe and accurate care to patients throughout the Women’s Health Units under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or physician.

  • Promotes and demonstrates self-directed learning and interest in occupational growth. Completes all competencies by the assigned date.

  • Facilitates the continuum of care by collaborating to provide patient care that is appropriate for the age and developmental level of the patient.

  • Participates in improving organizational performance. Demonstrates professional qualities, responsibilities, and accountabilities. Participates in managing environment of care.

  • Manages information appropriately and participates in surveillance, prevention, and control of infection.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)

  • Surgical Technologist (Required)

  • Surgical Technologist Certification by entity holding a Nationally recognized Institutional or program accreditation or successfully completed training program in US ARMY, Navy or Air Force. An individual may be hired and work as a Surgical Technologist without certification for a period of six months. The individual must provide documentation of successful completion of an approved surgical technology program.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

  • Education Specialization: Equivalent Experience: Surg tech

  • 1+ years Experience as Surgical Technologist
