About our Team

At STM Journals, we collaborate with researchers to facilitate the publication of their impactful scientific discoveries, with a focus on rigorous peer review, ethics, and reproducibility. In support of our portfolio of 2700+ hybrid and open access scientific journals, you will actively contribute to advancing science, improving health outcomes, and fostering equitable participation in publishing. Our Health and Medical Sciences journals organization has an opening for an Executive Publisher. This is an exciting opportunity to drive our strategy around content development, open access publishing and managing the growth of a high-profile portfolio of both society-owned and proprietary titles. The role reports to the Publishing Director and can be based in any of the US based primary locations.

About the Role

As Executive Publisher, you'll strategize, set goals, and monitor progress for your portfolio of journal titles and related products. You'll also cultivate a network of key decision-makers. You'll lead or join creative projects within Scientific Technical Medical Journals and contribute to complex initiatives across Elsevier. As an Executive Publisher, you have a proven track record of demonstrating the ability to work independently and you are a lead example to and coach/mentor to less experienced publishers. You play an instrumental role in championing a positive team spirit. (Preferred locations: NY MA Chicago PA. or alternate US East Coast location.)

Responsibilities

  • Developing the strategy for the portfolio. Ensure alignment with the department’s and the Journals organization’s goals.

  • Working with editors, authors, editorial boards and the academic community. Ensuring sufficient flow of relevant, high-quality manuscripts.

  • Negotiating and managing contractual relationships with journal editors.

  • Maintaining the existing portfolio proactively and continuously. Matching developments in the external marketplace, including the development of Open Access initiatives.

  • Ensuring continuous quality control and monitoring of all aspects of day-to-day. Including editorial, production and publishing operations and promptly address improvements where required.

  • Meeting portfolio related objectives. Including matters related to content growth, articles market share, citation share, relative impact factor, editorial speeds and author/editor satisfaction.

  • Managing the editorial fees budget and provide input to pricing processes.

  • Establishing, managing and maintaining excellent contacts with key stakeholders. Within the company, including editorial, production, publishing, marketing and technology teams. Coordinating activities as they relate to the portfolio’s needs and development.

Requirements

  • Have a secondary Education in a medical scientific field. Coupled with a minimum of 5+ years Scientific publishing experience. A PhD and People management experience are valued.

  • Able to build, nurture and manage editorial boards is a must.

  • Display exceptional commercial and negotiation skills and highly experienced in working with medical societies.

  • Have a thorough understanding of the publishing process and relevant market developments and relevant parts of the scientific world and its sociology.

  • Able to maintain full awareness of applications and remain up to date with technology, social media, and content enhancement.

  • Have a proven track record of strategic portfolio planning and successful revamp(s) of journals in competitor areas.

  • Display excellent communication and networking skills, coupled with strong leadership and team-building qualities.
