Summary:

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, coordination of all operational activities for a clinical service line. This includes collaboration with the OR Nurse Manager, Attending Surgeons and other surgical staff, Instrument Processing Manager, Materials Management Staff and vendors to develop and manage all aspects of patient care, utilization of departmental personnel, fiscal responsibility and material resources

Responsibilities:

Clinical Judgment:

  1. Develops or assists in the development of and implementation of the policies and procedures required to support the requirements of all licensing or regulatory agencies.

  2. Coordinates or assists with the development and implementation of educational programs to support quality of care within the department or service line.

  3. Supports excellence in patient care by planning for positive patient outcomes.

  4. Participates in clinical care as necessary.

  5. Acts as clinical expert within their service line.

  6. Assumes overall accountability for their service line. Delegate’s responsibility to others, in their absence.

  7. All other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.

Communication:

  1. Maintains positive and effective interpersonal relations with all members of the perioperative team; including but not limited to all levels of physician surgical staff, ancillary departments, hospital administration and all ancillary departments.

  2. Is proactive in response to all queries, staff issues and clinical issue.

  3. Collaborates with peers to resolve issues efficiently and effectively.

  4. Mentors new, inexperienced or other staff to assure positive and quality patient outcomes.

  5. Exhibits leadership qualities in problem solving, setting priorities and clinical excellence.

  6. All other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.

Quality/Performance Improvement:

  1. Actively participates in departmental quality initiatives.

  2. Provides leadership in assessment of departmental personnel as related to fulfillment of job expectations.

  3. Collaborates with the Nurse Manager and provides tangible feedback concerning staff performance.

  4. Supports the shared governance model.

  5. Insures efficient and effective operations through compliance with institutional and regulatory policies and procedures.

  6. All other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.

Fiscal Management:

  1. Is aware of the financial needs of their clinical service line.

  2. Designs and implements actions to maintain fiscal responsibility of their clinical service line and the overall Operating Room operation.

  3. Is proactive to assure all required items (implants, supplies, and personnel) are in place prior to the scheduled operative case,

  4. Identifies scheduling conflicts and resolves proactively.

  5. In conjunction with OR materials management, reviews inventory levels required for quality patient care.

  6. In conjunction with the OR Nurse Manager, identifies and implements cost containment measures.

  7. Is proactive to maintain physician case preference cards.

  8. Analyses budget variances related to clinical service activity.

  9. Implements required measures to meet fiscal targets.

  10. All other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.

    Education or Equivalent Experience:

3 Years OR Nursing experience and certification as CNOR preferred.

Minimum Certifications, Registry and/or Licenses Required:

Graduate of an NLN approved school of professional nursing. Currently licensed as a professional nurse in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Minimum Degree Requirements and Experience Required:

Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred. A minimum of three years of progressive nursing experience with demonstrated leadership skills.

Skill Requirements:

Evidence of excellent interpersonal relationships and communication skills. Consistently self-directed and a self-starter, leader and effective facilitator of group dynamics. Demonstrated ability to think creatively and build consensus around a common vision. Must be able to function effectively under stressful situations and tight deadlines. Must be able to work with frequent interruptions. Must be mentally alert, visual and hearing demands are extensive.
