THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is currently seeking a Technical Assistant to join its team, with an urgent need to support the inspection of transportation construction projects and the materials utilized in these projects. This role is crucial for ensuring that all work aligns with the established contract plans and specifications within the Construction Division of the Engineering District 3-0 Organization. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will support the oversight of construction activities related to road, bridge, and other transportation enhancement projects as designated, ensuring that all work adheres to the established plans, specifications, and specific provisions outlined in the contract. You will be responsible for documenting both personal and contractor activities in the Field Inspector's Diaries or PSA, Item Quantity Books, as well as in the sketch/Computation Book. It is essential to verify that work zone traffic control signs and devices are positioned and maintained in compliance with the Work Zone Traffic Control Plan and Publication 213. Additionally, you will be tasked with completing necessary project documentation as required.

This position encompasses a variety of additional responsibilities, including assisting in the analysis of contract plans, specifications, and special provisions, while effectively communicating the contract requirements to contractor personnel and other stakeholders. You will also be expected to notify Department supervisory or management staff regarding any issues involving contractor personnel, as well as the decisions made to address these issues or requests for further assistance. Furthermore, you will review safety practices on construction sites and advise contractor supervisory and management personnel on any necessary corrective measures.

Your duties will also involve performing mathematical calculations to determine the quantities of work completed and materials utilized, assisting with the preparation of periodic progress payments as directed, and checking stakeouts, elevations, grades, slopes, excavation, placement, and compaction of materials. You will collaborate with inspection personnel to conduct or witness testing of materials intended for project incorporation, as well as gather Materials Delivery Forms and Certifications for these materials.

Participation in training programs to enhance your skills related to construction and material inspection, along with other job responsibilities within the District, will be required. You may also be assigned to perform work within our District Units on a temporary basis. Additionally, you will need to travel independently to various work sites throughout the district as necessary.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.

  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time ad-hoc after successful completion of probationary period and training. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Montoursville.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
