THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is currently on the lookout for a skilled Drill Operator to join their team for employment during the summer months for the 2024 Summer Employment Program! This position entails operating drill rig equipment that is specifically assigned to this level of operator, as well as carrying out a range of manual laboring tasks as part of a drill crew.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The drill operator is responsible for operating various equipment such as trucks, drill rigs, water trucks, and electric drills. You will ensure safe operation and minimize wear by making necessary field adjustments, performing minor repairs, and performing preventative maintenance. This role also demonstrates equipment operation to other employees and assists mechanics in making minor repairs. In addition, you will maintain equipment records, perform manual labor duties while drilling, and obtain access to drill sites. The operator selects and uses tools properly for the job and reports missing or broken equipment. You will also assist in directing operators of rental equipment. Technical responsibilities include assisting in determining soil and rock types, performing soil and rock tests, identifying and labeling samples, and installing and monitoring slope indicator casings.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Seasonal Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.

  • Travel may be required.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in the operation of core and auger boring equipment; or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

    Necessary Special Requirements:

  • All positions require, at time of hire, an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent.

  • All positions require, at time of hire, possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.

  • All candidates must demonstrate, at time of interview, successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.

  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.

    Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
