Matheny is a special hospital for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities. Our fully-accredited non-profit private school combines traditional academics with therapeutic intervention and pre-vocational skill development. Our Adult Services Program includes seven licensed community residences/group homes and two adult learning centers. Staffed by experienced therapists and instructors, the program supports adult patients as they attain their highest level of functioning and integration into the community. Matheny's Arts Access program empowers individuals with disabilities to create art without boundaries. Through the use of innovative communication systems, the artists have complete freedom to explore a world that is defined only by their unlimited creativity and unique self-expression.

Matheny Medical and Educational Center has career opportunities available for Full Time Recreation Therapists (CTRS).

Duties of the Recreation Therapist include:

  • Conducts accurate assessments using departmental format.

  • Plans, develops, and implements appropriate treatment programs for each client based on the results of the evaluation and consultation with the treating team.

  • Demonstrates ability to utilize departmental technology and adaptive equipment during treatment.

  • Documents according to departmental procedures.

  • Demonstrates ability to plan, attend, and facilitate community trips based on client-related program goals and objectives.

  • Plans, develops, and implements leisure experiences which are appropriate for age and functioning level of clients.

  • Actively participates in departmental projects, performance improvement, and program development.

  • Works and communicates with treatment team members, sharing results of evaluations and therapeutic outcomes, regarding program goals and objectives consistent with needs and capabilities of each client.

  • Demonstrates safe handling techniques appropriate to the task, environment, and the individual.

  • Demonstrates ability to train client, family members, and caregivers in hospital to carry over treatment goals as needed.

  • Supervises Recreation Therapy student interns and volunteers as assigned.

  • Executes case management responsibilities effectively.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited college or university required.

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), as regulated by NCTRC organization.
