Key job responsibilities

As a specialized Hardware Development Engineer, you will engage with cross-disciplinary teams across Amazon's cutting-edge technology divisions. You will work closely with internal teams and external partners to drive product definition, execution, and testing for next-generation hardware. You must be responsive, flexible, and able to thrive in an open, collaborative environment. Depending on the team you join, you may also:

• Contribute to schematic design and PCB layout for innovative hardware projects

• Assist in prototype development and optimization for emerging technologies

• Participate in hardware validation and debugging across multiple product lines

• Develop and implement automated test procedures using industry-standard tools

• Collaborate on experiments for quantum computing or satellite systems

• Support the integration of AI and machine learning capabilities into hardware designs

• Assist in developing manufacturing processes for advanced consumer electronics

• Contribute to technical documentation and participate in design reviews

• May require travel to support engineering builds or on-site testing

A day in the life

Our internship program provides hands-on learning and building experiences for students who are interested in a career in hardware engineering. In addition to working on an impactful project, you will have the opportunity to engage with Amazonians for both personal and professional development, expand your network, and participate in fun activities with other interns throughout the winter. No matter the location of your internship, we give you the tools to own your internship and learn in a real-world setting.

Basic Qualifications

  • Work 40 hours/week minimum and commit to 12 week internship maximum

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field with an expected graduation between October 2025 – December 2028

  • Understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, including circuit design, power systems, and RF concepts

  • Hands-on experience with hardware prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting using standard lab equipment

  • Programming skills in at least one language (e.g., C++, Python, or MATLAB)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with emerging technologies such as quantum computing, satellite systems, robotics, or advanced consumer electronics

  • Proficiency in PCB design, prototyping, and testing of electronic systems, including use of specialized software tools like SPICE, MATLAB, or FPGA development environments

  • Knowledge of advanced topics such as RF/microwave design, machine learning hardware acceleration, space-grade electronics, or cutting-edge display technologies

  • Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary projects combining hardware and software, such as IoT devices or AI-enabled systems

  • Passion for innovation, as evidenced by personal projects, hackathons, or relevant coursework in areas like embedded systems, signal processing, or power electronics

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $41.78/hr in our lowest geographic market up to $88.94/hr in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
