As a Senior R&D Electrical Engineer at Power Tools, you will develop innovative electrical systems for surgical power tools used in clinical procedures on a variety of anatomies. You'll gain a deep appreciation for improving healthcare by working directly with surgeons and hearing patient stories.

Electrical engineers work on researching new technologies and applications, developing concept proofs and prototypes, protecting intellectual property, system algorithm development, communication protocols, visualization, integration, testing, debugging, and much more. Controls and interfaces include motors, lasers, fluidics, pneumatics, audio, and other transducers. You will find the best mix of design and simulation combined with hands-on lab work and multi-functional teamwork.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop robust and safe electrical systems, from the research and concept phase through requirements and specifications to manufacturing and post-launch support, including design, coding, simulation, testing, integration, and debugging.

  • Design mixed/analog, power electronics, motor control and digital circuit design and layout of simple to sophisticated printed circuit boards.

  • Perform high-level circuit simulations and modeling.

  • Perform hardware testing for IEC medical safety and EMC standards.

  • Design, develop, and document custom tools.

  • Collaborate with a multi-functional team to build innovative solutions.

  • Participate in the formal release process for medical devices, satisfying quality and regulatory requirements.

  • Help to plan projects and communicate the status of plans to the program management team.

Qualifications

Education:

  • BS degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Power Electronics, or related engineering field is required.

  • Advanced degree preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • 4 years of Electrical Engineering experience (or equivalent with advanced degree) is required.

  • Experience with bringing up and debugging new hardware.

  • Proficiency in Altium Designer, OrCAD, and/or equivalent PCB schematic and layout tools.

  • Proficiency in reading, understanding, and creating block diagrams, electrical schematics, and layouts.

  • Strong written and verbal communication, including presentation skills.

  • Effective team interactions.

Preferred:

  • Experience in an R&D / product development environment.

  • Experience designing and testing medical devices.

  • Experience in managing external suppliers/developers and conducting prototype builds.

  • Experience conducting/leading electrical compliance testing, including medical safety and EMC standards such as IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, and IEC 62304 for complex medical systems.

  • Experience with batteries.

  • Experience with failure analysis.

  • Experience with control systems and communication protocols.

  • Experience with embedded software and C/C Language.

  • Experience with Linux, UML, and/or Visual Basic.

Other:

  • It may require up to 10% travel.
