Job Summary

The Underground Miner performs a variety of tasks daily to support underground mining operations. Tasks assigned will vary daily, weekly, or monthly basis operational need and will range from simple to complex in nature. Light and heavy equipment operation will be required as part of this position. 

Final shift and position assignment determinations will be made to fill available openings upon completion of the interview process. Experience and qualifications presented during the interview process will be evaluated for best fit when multiple job openings exist.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Participate in operational and safety training
• Perform a pre-operational check on equipment as required by MSHA
• Must be able to safely and efficiently operate key pieces of equipment 
• Perform cleaning activities and complete routine greasing, oiling, and servicing of machines
• Fill out inspection sheets, timecards, production and other reports as required
• Must be capable of working independently for the duration of one's shift
• Must be alert to any conditions which could pose a safety hazard or result in injury or equipment breakdown or damage, and to report or correct such conditions immediately
• Must fill out the shift report for all machines they are instructed to operate with all required pertinent information.
• Makes minor repairs or adjustments to equipment as assigned and assist mechanics in major repairs as directed.
• Must be able to meet production standards while operating each required machine
• Perform all other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• High school degree or equivalent educational experience.
• Must be 18 years of age
• Positive attitude and strong work ethic
• Must be able to apply for an ATF license through Morton Salt
• Able to work independently and as an active member of a team
• Good interpersonal skills and communication with all levels of management
• Prior experience with heavy equipment is a positive, but due to specific nature, mining equipment experience not required.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

Works in an underground mine where temperatures in the work areas range from 78° -- 100°F. The relative humidity is high in summer and low in winter

Work areas are generally dry

Lighting is provided in key areas; however, most areas are illuminated only by a miner's cap lamp and/or by equipment lighting

Floor heave is prevalent and may result in uneven floor conditions. Floors may also be polished by mobile equipment traffic resulting in slippery footing

Some work must be done around machinery and equipment that is in motion as well as around energized power cables

As with all work underground, this position requires attention be paid to roof and rib conditions

Must be able to stand for long periods of time while operating machine

Must be able to walk for long distances over terrain varying from soft to hard as well as slick and uneven
