Environmental Technician

The Environmental Technician is a member of the Health, Safety, Environmental and Security (HSES) department and reports to the HSES Manager. The Technician is responsible for regulatory environmental duties and wastewater treatment at the Pace plant, providing support for operations and maintenance to ensure adherence to the site’s Environmental Compliance program.

This is a full-time position working a 9/80 schedule with a good portion of this time spent working independently in the field. Candidate must be able to work overtime as necessary and be able to travel 1-2 times per year for training.

The primary duties are the fundamental requirements of the job. The list of duties is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Employees in this role may not have primary responsibility for all duties but will be required to perform these duties up to 25% of the time or as necessary. Employees must exercise principles of safety, environmental management, quality management and good housekeeping in all aspects of the job and must inform supervision of any unsafe practices or conditions.

Primary Duties

  • Manage site’s non-hazardous/hazardous waste containers coordination, shipments, satellite accumulation areas and 90-day storage areas. Includes the following:

  • Sampling, scheduling, manifesting, and labeling; assisting with profiling waste

  • Updating site spreadsheet, drawings and documents

  • Lifting and labeling empty 55-gallon steel or overpack steel drums; using drum lifter, pallet mover or forklift to move full drums, weigh drums or position drums on pallets

  • Installing lids and seals utilizing a bung wrench, impact wrench, and/or rachet/socket

  • Picking up full 5- or 10-gallon sealed buckets containing waste

  • Laying out liners and containments (8’x8’ up to 12’x54’) for waste containers or laying out other material for containment of loose debris

  • Moving empty totes (300-400 gallon capacities) and utilizing forklifts to move totes containing material

  • Setting jack stands for waste trailers parked on-site; moving jack stands with a forklift

  • Installing liners in roll-off boxes (20 – 30 cubic yard dumpsters)

  • Opening/closing roll-tarps on dumpsters including use of rachets

  • Operating air driven or diesel operated pumps

  • Conducting non-routine waste meetings with Operations, Maintenance, Laboratory, Engineering, and/or Contractor personnel

  • Collecting and analyzing samples or sending samples off-site for analyses

  • Keeping hazardous waste training current

  • Miscellaneous: Shoveling and scooping material; moving various types and lengths of hoses

Primary Duties

  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly and annual site HSES compliance duties and inspections for air, waste and wastewater; includes collecting and packaging field samples for analysis

  • Work with internal departments to ensure compliance with environmental requirements

  • Coordinate and perform minor maintenance; work with maintenance on major repairs

  • Work with other HSES personnel, engineering, and maintenance on project work concerning wastewater operations and HSES department; includes Safe Work Permitting, Lock Out Tag Out, Hot Work Permitting, etc.

  • Assist with completion of facility environmental reports

  • Assist with site’s Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) Fugitive Monitoring Program:

  • Monitor field components and pumps as required

  • Update and pull reports from LeakDas as necessary

  • Update site spreadsheets, drawings and word documents

  • Understand heat and material balances, process flow diagrams, and process and instrumentation drawings

  • Calibrate on-site analyzers

  • Provide support to Operations for the site’s compliance programs

  • Perform groundwater monitoring activities including field sampling and calibrating equipment

  • Assist with site regulatory inspections

  • HSES On-call duty

  • Provide necessary response including providing instruction, equipment and clean-up efforts in the event of a release

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Must have a ZERO INCIDENT/SAFETY FIRST mindset

  • Must be focused with excellent attention to detail

  • Must have strong problem-solving skills

  • Must have initiative and be able to work independently; taking initiative to make best use of time and resources. This position spends a good deal of time working independently in the field

  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude

  • Understanding of process flow diagrams and process and instrumentation drawings preferred

  • Good oral and written communication skills; Must be a strong listener with the ability to follow instructions

  • Must be dependable and exhibit a strong work ethic

  • Basic computer skills required, including Outlook, Word, SharePoint, and Excel

  • Must be willing and able to learn regulations and compliance

  • Must be willing to learn new processes and adapt to change

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required • Two years of related plant experience required • Associates degree or coursework in Environmental Science, Process Technology or related field preferred • Current driver’s license required • Must be able to pass physical, drug screen and background check

Physical Factors and Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds

  • Ability to exert force required to turn large valves

  • Ability to traverse various types of terrain in the field

  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights above 100 ft. with appropriate safety equipment

  • Must repeatedly stoop, crouch, kneel, bend and reach

  • Ability to work with power tools and hand tools

  • Ability to wear respirator

  • Willing to work outdoors in all types of Florida weather

  • Must be able to wear chemical suit, including in extreme conditions
