General Motors Senior Manager, Labour Relations – Canada in Oshawa, Ontario

Job Description

The Senior Manager, Labour Relations - Canada, is responsible for the strategic national-level administration of Labour Relations for all GM Canada locations.

As the Canadian subject matter expert in strategic labour relations, you will help develop a progressive and collaborative workforce culture while directly supporting the achievement of the Company’s strategic competitive operating objectives through the collective bargaining process, and situationally.

This role reports to the General Director, HR & Labour Relations - Canada, works closely with the US labour team and is the key contact for our plant HR/LR directors and union partners at the national, plant and local union level.

  • Comfortable collaborating with senior leaders in Canada and GMNA, providing considered direction on strategic competitive objectives, supporting various workforce engagement efforts, and promoting a culture of progressive labour relations.

  • Help build a strong culture and collaborative work climate that drives positive business results.

  • Experience in working closely with various key cross-functional stakeholders to problem-solve complex and urgent issues, implement change management initiatives, and communicate updates with a strong compliance focus.

  • Demonstrate a firm understanding of the legal requirements at execution level related to management of employees, appreciation for our approach to reducing legal risks and regulatory compliance.

  • Understanding of Manufacturing operations and ability to work through ambiguous situations.

  • You have a strong financial and business acumen, as well as a deep understanding of our brands, company, function, and products.

Responsibilities…

  • Help define overall Labour strategy for Canada along with US Labour team.

  • Provide strategic guidance and disposition to the senior leadership and site HR/LR teams on the administration of the various collective agreements, in particular the GM/Unifor Master Agreement

  • Build and promote a collaborative working relationship with Union partners across all locations

  • Provide strategic guidance to the site HR/LR teams in identifying and negotiating competitive operating agreements and local work practices in order to help reduce structural and operating costs and increase operating flexibility

  • Actively participate in regular problem-resolution and conflict management

  • Act as the GM Representative Liaison with the various National Unions

  • Lead the GM/Unifor National Master Agreement Collective Bargaining with and achieve the Company’s strategic objectives

  • Provide strategic oversight to the Local Agreement Collective Bargaining within the approved goalposts

  • Lead and coordinate the Splinter Union Collective Bargaining; OUSE, ONA, Unifor-St. Catharines Powerhouse, Unifor - Kapuskasing

  • Centrally coordinate the consistent implementation of any new legislation changes/updates that impact the hourly workforce across all GM Canada locations

  • Lead the 4th Step Grievance Process with a focus on problem resolution

  • Support the Grievance Arbitration Process

  • Participate in Human Rights Tribunal hearings, as required

  • Participate in Ontario Labour Relations Board hearings, as required

  • Coordinate and lead the General Business Update Meetings with Union partners

  • Provide specific guidance and instruction to key stakeholder groups in the implementation of the collective agreement provisions to align with various system administration; Payroll, IT, Benefits, 3rd party vendors, etc.

  • Lead problem-solving activities with key internal stakeholder groups; GMNA-LR, ECA, Legal, Benefits, Payroll, and site HR/LR teams, as required

  • Manage Supplier Relations from an LR perspective with support from GPSC

  • Develop and coordinate Delegation of Authority (DOA) Proposals to support exception requests

  • Coordinate Divisional LR Training for site HR/LR teams

  • Coordinate special investigations

  • Assist with the administration of plant rules

Additional Job Description

Qualifications…

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA considered an asset

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive labour relations experience, and employee relations experience

  • Strong interpersonal skills in facilitation, negotiation and conflict resolution

  • Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and work to plan

  • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience with provincial employment standards and labour relations legislation

  • Skill and proficiency in a wide range of HR practice areas and systems

  • Experience leading collective bargaining, negotiations, contract administration, and interpretation is required.
