Position Overview

At Kiewit, one of our guiding principles on every project and in every office is, “Nobody Gets Hurt” and we’re currently looking for a Safety Coordinator who will create, support and audit our programs which reinforce our commitment to safety.

As a Safety Coordinator, you will report to the project Safety Manager. Your primary responsibilities centers on the successful implementation and support of the Site Specific Safety Plan in the field. You will assist the project Safety Manager with the application of the contract, client safety expectations, Corporate Safety Manual, District Standards, and all laws governing the work. You will also verify to ensure that work is being executed as planned, problem-solve with operations and craft, assist with corrective measures, and provide resources to correct and maintain solutions.

District Overview

Kiewit's Southeast District is one of Kiewit's leading infrastructure districts specializing in heavy civil, transportation, and water resource markets. Projects you could be working on could include building bridges, airports, mass transit systems, canals, dams, pump stations or tunnels. Although most of our work is regionally based in the southeast region of the United States, we also pursue various projects stretching across the east coast. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about infrastructure and committed to the construction industry as opposed to design.

  • Review and enforce APP, EM 385 and OSHA standards.

  • Most stringent applies.

  • On-site 100% of the time during work.

  • Collect and Maintain Safety Data Sheets.

  • Conduct Eye Wash Station Inspections.

  • Updating the Competent Person Tracker.

  • onduct Monthly Fire Extinguisher Inspections.

  • Conduct AED/First Aid Kit Inspections.

  • Conduct Safety Orientations.

  • Conducts investigations of all accidents and near-misses.

  • Collect Daily Equipment Inspections

  • Complete Daily Safety Reports and attach all documents and pictures.

  • Inspect site and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g. not using protective equipment)

  • Inspect the site to ensure it is hazard-free.

  • Maintain Accident Prevention Plan Compliance.

  • Obtain, Post & Keep all permits (hot work, burn, Confined space, etc...)

  • Perform Daily Site Safety Inspections

  • Performs safety drills (emergency response, man over board, etc.)

  • Present Daily Safety Briefings/Meetings.

  • Responds to all safety concerns & issues.

  • Maintain safety deficiency log.

  • Write and review all AHAs and attach all certifications.

  • Conduct a Daily Tool Box Talk and summit it.


Below is required qualification for SSHO. Some projects will require more than list below. Projects may require experience with Fall Protection (including elevated platforms), Scaffolding, Steel Erection, Excavation, Cranes, etc.

  • Travel is 60-80% mainly in the southeast

  • The 30-hour OSHA General Industry safety class (may be web-based training if the student is able to directly ask questions of the instructor by chat or phone).

  • Or 30-hour OSHA Construction Industry safety class (may be web-based training if the student is able to directly ask questions of the instructor by chat/phone).

  • Or an equivalent, formal construction or industry safety and health training covering the subjects of the OSHA 30-hour course.

  • Five (5) years of continuous construction industry safety experience in supervising/ managing general construction (managing safety programs or processes or conducting hazard analyses and developing controls),

  • Or Five (5) years of continuous general industry safety experience in supervising/ managing general industry (managing safety programs or processes or conducting hazard analyses and developing controls)

  • Or if the SSHO has a Third-Party, Nationally Accredited (ANSI or National Commission for Certifying Agencies - NCCA) SOH-related certification, only 4 years of experience is needed.

  • CFPS - Certified Fire Protection Specialist

  • CIH - Certified Industrial Hygienist

  • CHP - Certified Health Physicist

  • CHMM – Certified Hazardous Materials Manager

  • CHMP - Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner

  • CHST - Construction Health and Safety Technologist

  • CMSP – Certified Mine Safety Professional

  • COHN - Certified Occupational Health Nurse

  • COHN-S - Certified Occupational Health Nurse - Specialist

  • CSP – Certified Safety Professional

  • OHST - Occupational Health and Safety Technologist

  • STS – Safety Trained Supervisor

  • Maintain competency through having taken 8 hours of documented formal, on-line, or self-study safety and health related coursework every year, dating back 5 years.

  • writing an article

  • teaching a class

  • reading/writing professional articles

  • attendance/participation in professional societies/meetings, etc.

  • First Aid and CPR Certified.

  • Fall Protection Training for Fall protection Program Manager:

  • ANSI/ASSE Z359.2

  • Program Managers shall complete refresher training annually, by participating in at least one (1) hour of fall protection and rescue-related informational meetings and/or training.

  • Proof of all training certifications for all competencies/qualification as listed below.

  • HAZWOPER may be required depending on amount of hazard
