Position Summary:

Astronics Test Systems is looking for a highly motivated candidate for a Director of Accounting role. The position will report to the President and will be an integral member of the team with primary responsibility for the completeness, accuracy and integrity of the segment’s financial accounting and reporting. Must be able to synthesize significant financial information and convey pertinent facts in an accurate and timely manner. This role will also include the development of consistent accounting processes across all sites, domestic and international, and will spearhead the establishment of guidelines for proper accounting of the segment’s transactions under U.S. GAAP. The Director of Accounting will work closely with the Director of Finance and the segment’s senior management and must have very strong communication and presentation skills. The ideal candidate will be comfortable researching technical accounting issues and providing views on a broad range of accounting issues. This role will also liaise frequently with the corporate finance department in connection with the reporting and analysis of the segment’s monthly, quarterly, and annual financial information. This role will also coordinate with internal and external auditors engaged in the audit of company financial statements and internal controls.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working with Corporate finance, evaluate the impact of new accounting and reporting standards on a changing business environment and develop a plan for execution.

  • Within the segment, responsible for overall direction, training, coordination, and evaluation of accounting staff. Assure resources are deployed to provide quality and on-time reporting.

  • Responsible for legal compliance and risk management.

  • Support senior management with analysis, review, reporting and other technical accounting related needs.

  • Update and/or implement accounting policies and procedures to respond to changes within the Company. Provide ongoing leadership to the accounting teams across the segment.

  • Working with Director of Finance, corporate finance and others, develop a transfer pricing policy and ensure ongoing compliance.

  • Review intercompany activities to ensure proper accounting recognition.

  • Review site financial submissions.

  • Review account reconciliations for high-risk/complex accounts.

  • Review Quarterly P&L, Balance Sheet, and Actual/Budget fluctuation analyses prior to submission to Corporate to ensure appropriate detail, and to identify potential issues requiring research or adjustment.

  • Review Quarterly disclosure support schedules to Corporate and ensure all significant/unusual items or trends are understood and properly reflected.

  • Review program revenue recognition. Working with Director of Finance and program management, evaluate reasonableness of estimates.

  • Evaluate inventory costing methodology and variance treatment for proper accounting treatment.

  • Evaluate overhead pools to ensure proper recognition within program cost estimates and inventory, versus period cost recognition. Track actual overhead pools and application to identify absorption issues.

  • Partner with corporate financial management as key liaison for all divisional related corporate financial requirements including month/quarter/annual close and analysis, internal controls evaluation, implementation of any new standards, and interface with external and internal auditors.

  • Assist with providing on-going technical accounting training to the Finance organization.

  • Review the revenue recognition treatment of the segment’s contracts and ensure conclusions are completely and appropriately documented in accordance with Corporate requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field

  • Certified Public Accountant, Big 4 Accounting experience preferred.

  • 10+ years of public and private industry experience.

  • Strong knowledge of SOX 404

  • SEC reporting experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and experience with the implementation of new accounting guidance.

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment and deep knowledge of cost accounting and project accounting.

  • Hands-on knowledge and operational experience in applying ASC 606 revenue recognition principles.

  • Ability to set and keep deadlines at a fast pace without losing accuracy.

  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills with experience at managing multiple teams across a variety of geographic sites.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to function independently, driven towards superior effort and performance along with the desire to work in a very dynamic environment.

  • Experience in a business partnering role, including understanding functional area roles, responsibilities, and the interdependencies with accounting.

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, including written and verbal communication, especially in developing positions and presenting to management, auditors, and non-accounting stakeholders.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with systems implementations / optimizations.

  • Strong project-managements skills.

  • Confident self-starter who is flexible and embraces change.

  • Strong at execution, follow-up and attention to detail.

  • A team player, adept at building relationships across the organization.

Travel Requirements:

  • Anticipated travel of 1 week per month to ATS headquarters in Orlando.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Must speak English.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:

  • Must be proficient using MS Office Applications such as Excel and Word.

  • Accounting software
