We are seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented person to assist with teaching mandatory safe boating classes, scheduling courses, and distributing materials to volunteer instructors throughout the state. This Classroom Assistant position will be at DEEP Marine Headquarters, 333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme, CT. Candidates must be a Connecticut DEEP Certified Boating Instructor (or willing to obtain this certification within the first month of employment) with a willingness to expand our safe boating classes throughout Connecticut while ensuring students receive a quality safe boating education class. The start date for this position is February 2025. Boating Classroom Assistants Needed March to October; 40 hours per week though work hours may vary daily but typically Monday through Friday with some evening and weekend work required; Must be a Connecticut State Certified Boating Instructor or be willing to become certified within the first month of employment; Valid Connecticut driver’s license required. Responsibilities Include: Assisting Boating Division staff with scheduling courses and instructors for safe boating classes; Delivering course materials; Teaching boating courses as assigned or on-call; and Assisting with public outreach events, as needed. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY Ability to follow instructions. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS BOATING CLASSROOM ASSISTANT Knowledge of and experience in boating Experience communicating to the public on the phone, email or in person Experience with organizational prioritization and time-management Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) Willingness to teach safe boating courses in-person and virtually Candidates must be a Connecticut DEEP Certified Boating Instructor (or willing to obtain this certification within the first month of employment) with a willingness to expand our safe boating classes throughout Connecticut while ensuring students receive a quality safe boating education class. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following: Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides. College training in a specific field. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
