TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION E096 Construction Inspector IV or V (Odessa Area) in Odessa, Texas

Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution. OR Oversees statewide oversight activities for construction projects; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution and/or provides statewide technical assistance and training in support of implementation, oversight and review of Site Manager activities.Trains others. May lead the work of professional and technical employees. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. May perform material tests/manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Work requires contact with other governmental agencies and private entities to include contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.Essential Duties: The essential duties for a Construction Inspector IV include: Composes correspondence, reports and supporting documents; files; orders supplies and equipment.Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensures material tests are performed and materials meet required standards.Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining cause for material problems.Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.Prepares and reviews correspondence.Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.Drives/travels to geographically separated fabrication plants/project sites to monitors program status; perform unannounced inspection of operations, and problem resolution.Schedules, coordinates and performs in-plant structural product inspections and intermediate audits.Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.Additional duties for a Construction Inspector V include: Rejects substandard material and informs producers and suppliers of material and production problems.Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.Drives/travels to geographically separated fabrication plants/project sites to monitors program status; perform unannounced inspection of operations, and problem resolution.Independently schedules, coordinates and performs in plant structural product inspections and intermediate audits at local an/or geographically separated locations.
