Job Summary
This position supports MEC efforts to diversify the ocean science workforce by providing undergraduate students from minority-serving institutions with experiential education that raises awareness of and improves access to ocean science. The successful applicant will administer selected MEC projects and seek funding for new projects. The position includes dedicated engagement with project partners and participants to provide mentoring experiences that build capacity for student participation in marine research and foster a diverse and inclusive ocean science workforce.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Create and cultivate authentic relationships with partners at Minority Serving Institutions to recruit students from diverse backgrounds into the field of ocean science.
Increase long-term retention by developing sustainable mentoring systems that inspire and support students from diverse backgrounds to enter and build careers in the field of ocean science. Intentionally ingrain inclusivity, equity, and belonging throughout programming to support retention of underrepresented students in the ocean science field.
Administer externally funded projects, including implementation, evaluation, staff supervision, recordkeeping, reporting, and budget management.
Assist in developing proposals that fund new MEC programs and partnerships.
Use equitable, evidence-based practices to communicate science and engage members of diverse audiences in experiential education.
Interact with existing project partners and assist in engaging new partners from academic, research, industry, and nonprofit organizations. Communicate project findings at national conferences.
Work jointly with team members to conduct outreach and occasionally instruct programs related to environmental science and organizational activities.
Maintain certifications in CPR, first aid, water safety, and safe conduct of minors on campus and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
B.S. in STEM or education-related field. Three years of relevant experience, including experience working directly with people from diverse backgrounds. Valid driver’s license.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary, including overnight travel.
Preferred Qualifications
M.S. in STEM or an education-related field plus three years of relevant experience. Experience with student engagement or grant writing.
