Kaiser Permanente Research Project Manager- Vaccine Studies in Oakland, California

Job Summary:

Embedded within the Division of Research, the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center (KPVSC) is a leader in evaluating vaccines with a long history of collaboration with multiple federal agencies, particularly the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office. The KPVSC has also been engaged in Phase II, III, and IV vaccine trials, collaborating with the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA to help bring new vaccines into licensure and then to evaluate and ensure their safety. Most recently, the KPVSC was instrumental in all aspects regarding COVID-19 vaccines: conducting clinical trials prior to authorization, monitoring their safety after widespread use (leading the CDC funded Vaccine Safety Datalink surveillance), and assessing their effectiveness through national collaborative research projects. Additionally, KPVSC has played a critical role in monitoring the safety and effectiveness of other vaccines, including influenza, pertussis, measles, respiratory syncytial virus, shingles, and pneumococcal vaccines. Currently, KPVSC has a team of over 40 individuals, including 3 MD/PhD-level investigators, programmer analysts, project managers, research assistants, nurses, and physicians.

We are currently seeking an experienced project manager to provide high-level administrative and scientific support for a portfolio of studies focused on vaccine research.

Manages all aspects of large scale and/or multi-center research projects. Large project usually is multi-year, with a budget in excess of 200k annually and hundreds of participants at multiple sites, or involve highly complex data collection on a smaller number of participants. Resolves policy, research design and administrative issues and problems.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management/operations of large scale research projects. Supervises project coordinators, research associates/assistants, as well as hiring, disciplinary and termination decisions. Prepares grant proposals with the investigator for submission. May coordinate the work of programmers/analysts.

  • Prepares, manages and balances budgets on projects. Responsible for collection of data and conducting data analysis. Prepares progress reports independently and collaboratively. May co-authors scientific papers with the investigator for publication. Interacts with national study sites, such as project officers, state and federal agencies, research teams from other organizations.

  • Kaiser Permanente conducts compensation reviews of positions on a routine basis. At any time, Kaiser Permanente reserves the right to reevaluate and change job descriptions, or to change such positions from salaried to hourly pay status. Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience in one or more of the technical areas required.

Education

  • Bachelors degree required, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

  • N/A

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of research principles, design and strategies, bio-statistical analyses and data interpretation.

  • Able to conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses.

  • Must demonstrate effective communication, consulting, interpersonal and project management skills.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in public health, health care administration, epidemiology or other related field OR six (6) years of experience in a directly related field preferred.

  • MPH degree and at least 5 years of project manager experience preferred but not required.

Secondary Functions:

  • This is for 1-2 years.
