Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy Project Manager III in Oakland, California

Responsible for the most complex systems and non-systems projects to be implemented in NCR and/or other regions. Forms and leads multidisciplinary teams including staff, other KP personnel, outside suppliers, and contract consultants to define requirements, author technical studies, design and approve specifications, establish and approve testing requirements, and develop an implementation and training plan. Recruits and develops resources and prepares and monitors approved budget. Manages one or more business lines which support TPMG and CSAs operations, service and revenue.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages multiple system and non-system projects that have regional and/or interregional impact tom members, TPMG, KFH/HP providers and employees.

  • Responsible for the overall project budget, resources, scope and all other tasks.

  • Analyzes project design, approves expenditures, analyzes variances and initiates corrective actions.

  • Manages the development, implementation, and re-engineering of programs (system/non-system) designed to improve member service, patient care and health care outcomes.

  • Provides clinical expertise to ensure that the proposed changes will be consistent with State and Federal law with respect to the practice of Pharmacy.

  • Collaborates with Area pharmacy managers, other health care providers other departments within Pharmacy Operations, to develop new strategies and possible solutions to increase revenue, and improve member services.

  • Establishes and maintains communication strategies to effectively share information with all stakeholders.

  • Evaluates new business endeavors and recommends strategies which will maximized the ROI to KP.

  • Collaborates with outside vendors, suppliers, and regulatory agencies to effect change in their policies, prices and functions to the benefit of KP.

  • Establishes fee schedule and analyzes impact of prices to the organizations financial targets.

  • Evaluates pricing scenarios and works closely with department manager to ensure financial targets are met.

  • Responsible for the maintenance of all databases (drug, providers, pricing, etc.) internal and external to KP to maintain data integrity and patient safety and service.

  • Manages call center operations designed to assist the Areas in their effort to improve service. Calls are from providers and patients requiring drug information and prescription.

  • Manages the multimillion dollar business unit responsible for regional drug therapy conversions which support Regional, TPMG and Area financial, and quality goals.

  • Assists with developing long range strategic plans.

  • Develop and implement pricing strategies consistent with KP business requirements and applicable laws and regulations.

  • Develop processes to assure consistency across regions.

  • Monitor pricing to ensure that actual prices charged are consistent with pricing methodology. Develop and implement systems to ensure that prices accurately reflect discounts and rebates according to KP pricing policies.

  • Develop and implement reporting processes and systems for revenue forecasting, business reports and required regulatory reports.

Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience in and outpatient or inpatient pharmacy; leading concurrent multiple complex projects and project teams.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience leading multidisciplinary teams with clinical applications including pharmacy systems.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of management/administrative experience in the health care arena.


  • Degree in pharmacy from an accredited School of Pharmacy.

License, Certification, Registration

  • Licensed pharmacist in California.

Additional Requirements:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience related to pharmaceutical pricing benchmarks (AWP, WAC), databases (First Data Bank, Medispan), and methods.

  • Master's degree in a related health care field is preferred.

  • Able to analyze complex, multivariate problems involving drug cost, drug pricing and revenue.
