In this position you will provide supervision, training and motivation to incarcerated individuals assigned to the Paint Crew and perform all types of journeyman level painting including: exterior and interior painted surfaces throughout the Institution through the application of drywall, paints, stains, varnishes, fillers, caulking at Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF) Oak Park Heights.

This position has direct contact with incarcerated individuals.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify you must meet ONE of the following THREE requirements:

  1. Approved apprenticeship (6000 hours) in painting; OR

  2. Three years of experience as a painter, including commercial or residential work preparing and painting a variety of surfaces; OR

  3. One school-year of a vocational-technical or trade school painting program plus two years of experience as a painter, as described above.

Qualifying painting experience includes the following:

  • Knowledge of standard painting practices, techniques, materials and tools sufficient to requisition and select supplies and materials and apply them to complete painting and decorating projects.

  • Knowledge of construction plans and painting specifications sufficient to interpret, modify and follow them to complete painting and decorating projects.

  • Knowledge of shop math sufficient to estimate labor and material costs for planned projects.

  • Skill in using hand tools, such as brushes, rollers, scrapers and power equipment such as spray guns, sanders, etc., sufficient to prepare, cover and decorate interior and exterior surfaces of state buildings, structures, woodwork, furniture, etc.NOTE: Wallpapering and wood refinishing work will be credited when accompanied by adequate qualifying painting experience. Experience painting vehicles only will not be credited.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing sheetrock and all related work.

  • Experience performing plaster and all related work.

  • Trained in scaffold and aerial lift.

Physical Requirements

The completion of pre-placement physical components may be required for this position. These components may consist of a tuberculosis screening, commercial drivers license (CDL) drug test, and/or respirator clearance. Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.

Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
