Our Purpose
At Teradyne we are at the forefront of Production Board Test solutions, dedicated to developing cutting-edge test solutions and systems. We are seeking a dynamic and hands-on Hardware Engineering Manager to join our team. This role requires a blend of guidance and technical expertise, with a strong foundation in analog and digital circuit design and PCBA fabrication. The ideal candidate will thrive in a player/coach capacity, balancing leadership responsibilities while actively contributing to the design and development of high-quality hardware products.
Opportunity Overview
As a Hardware Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for spearheading a team of design engineers while actively participating in the development, prototyping, and testing of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and assemblies (PCBA). You will guide the team in meeting project goals, improving processes, and ensuring product reliability, while also contributing directly to hands-on engineering tasks. Your experience in PCB design, fabrication, and test techniques will be crucial to ensuring the success of both your team and the hardware products we deliver. Another important element required for our success is continuous collaboration with other disciplines, particularly our software team, to deliver the total product solutions our customers demand.
Team Leadership & Development:
Lead and mentor a team of hardware engineers, providing technical guidance, architectural direction and fostering a collaborative, innovative work environment.
Set clear goals and performance expectations, manage team dynamics, and ensure high levels of engagement and productivity.
Conduct regular performance reviews, offer constructive feedback, and identify opportunities for professional growth.
Hands-On Engineering:
Actively contribute to the design, development, and testing of PCBs and PCBAs, with a focus on high-quality, reliable designs.
Oversee PCB layout, schematic design, and component selection to ensure designs meet performance and manufacturability standards.
Participate in the testing and validation of PCBA, utilizing advanced test techniques such as functional, boundary scan, in-circuit testing (ICT), and other diagnostic tools to ensure product quality.
Project Management:
Oversee hardware development projects from concept to production, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met while maintaining a high standard of quality.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., firmware, software, and mechanical engineering) to ensure alignment and smooth project execution.
Provide regular updates to senior management on project status, risks, and mitigation strategies.
Process Improvement & Innovation:
Identify areas for improvement in hardware design, testing, and manufacturing processes, and implement best practices to enhance product quality and engineering efficiency.
Stay current with emerging hardware technologies, industry trends, and testing methodologies, and apply them to improve team capabilities and product offerings.
Customer Focus & Quality Assurance:
Ensure that products meet or exceed customer requirements, industry standards, and regulatory compliance.
Troubleshoot and resolve hardware-related issues in collaboration with the quality assurance and operations teams.
All About You
Experience:
5+ years of hands-on experience in hardware engineering, with a strong background in PCB design and fabrication.
2+ years in a managerial role, ideally in a player/coach capacity where both technical contribution and team management are required.
Proven experience with PCBA test techniques such as functional testing, ICT, boundary scan, and other diagnostic methods \
Technical Skills:
Proficient in PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence, or similar).
In-depth understanding of PCB manufacturing processes, including design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for test (DFT).
Strong understanding of electrical and electronic principles, circuit design, and signal integrity.
Experience with hardware debugging tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, etc.).
Knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to hardware design, testing, and quality assurance.
Leadership & Soft Skills:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage teams, collaborate cross-functionally, and communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to overcoming challenges.
Ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of work.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with high-speed PCB design and complex multi-layer designs.
Familiarity with automation and software-driven testing methods for PCBA In-Circuit Testing
