Principal Data Scientist

The VF Data Science & Platforms organization brings together product, engineering, architecture, machine learning and operations to design, develop and deliver state-of-the-art data driven capabilities to power the next generation of digital retail. Our team works end to end across our full portfolio of brands to elevate consumer experiences on a global scale.

As a Principal Data Scientist, you will discover and solve real world problems by analyzing large amounts of business data, defining new metrics and business cases, designing simulations and experiments, creating models, and collaborating with colleagues in business, software, and research. You will get the exciting opportunity to work with data covering a diverse portfolio of consumer brands with extensive opportunities to drive impact on a global scale. You will be part of a fast-paced, innovative, collaborative team, helping solve problems, drive impact, and deliver key insights to our customers by leveraging innovations in data science, machine & deep learning, and predictive modeling techniques.

How You Will Make a Difference

What you will do:

  • Engage with a multi-disciplinary team of leaders to across all aspect of a global retail business to design, develop and deploy data driven capabilities that achieve consumer objectives.

  • Influence a variety of product roadmaps across supply chain, marketing, ecommerce, customer support, retail stores, and other critical lines of business.

  • Help develop and evolve a world-class portfolio of machine learning services striking the right balance of best of breed and internally developed algorithms.

  • Test hypotheses in a high-ambiguity environment making use of qualitative data, judgment, and customer feedback.

  • Elevate the use of data as a core competency and impact driver at VF and its portfolio of brands by developing best in class solutions and practices.

  • Provide feedback and guidance to the data platform engineering on technical needs to accelerate the speed and scale of applied statistics and algorithms.

How you will do it:

  • Analyze large amounts of data from different parts of a global consumer retail business (e.g. supply chain, ecommerce, marketing) and their associated business functions

  • Improve upon existing machine learning methodologies by developing new data sources, developing and testing model enhancements, running computational experiments, and fine-tuning model parameters for new models

  • Formalize assumptions about how models are expected to behave, creating definitions of outliers, developing methods to systematically identify these outliers, and explaining why they are reasonable or identifying fixes for them

  • Utilize code (Python, R, Scala, etc.) for analyzing data and building statistical and machine learning models and algorithms

What success looks like:

  • Performing work with a high degree of independence in terms of self-management of a large variety of tasks in a matrixed organization

  • Communicating verbally and in writing to business customers with various levels of technical knowledge, educating them about our research, as well as sharing insights and recommendations

Years of Related Professional Experience: 8 years

Educational Position Requirements: A formal education and subsequent undergraduate/graduate degrees are nice to have, but we are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.

  • Have a strong quantitative background and can thrive in an environment that leverages statistics, machine learning, operations research, econometrics, and business analysis.

  • A strong understanding of retail and apparel best practices and trends

  • Exude a high degree of character and integrity and a rigorous focus on collaborative solutions development

  • You embody a global outlook with sensitivity and awareness of social and cultural differences

  • Ability to mentor and foster growth of junior team members

Salary Range:

$128,000.00 USD - $192,000.00 USD annually

Annual Incentive Eligibility :

This position is eligible to participate in VF's Annual Incentive Plan. Incentive Plan awards are contingent upon (1) achievement of your individual objectives and (2) VF achieving its' Corporate and business level financial objectives.

Long Term Incentive Eligibility :

This position is not eligible for long term incentive.
