JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for performing donor medical qualifications, determining donor suitability and handling donor reactions under the direction of the Center Manager, Physician Substitute Supervisor and Center Medical Director. Operates within the scope of EU Guidance on Good Manufacturing Practices and FDA cGMP 21CFR.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Core

  • Provides donor satisfaction through appropriate interaction and responsiveness to donor needs.

  • Determines donor suitability by evaluating normal healthy donors for plasmapheresis procedures and immunizations that meet the criteria of normal plasma donors in accordance with SOPs, the FDA, OSHA, CLIA and cGMP and company policies as well as educational experience.

  • Consults with Center Medical Director, as needed.

  • Performs physical examinations for donors and reviews accumulated data in a timely manner to confirm donor suitability.

  • Promotes donor education of the plasma donation process to encourage a positive donor experience.

  • Answers and discusses donor questions and ensures the donor is given a clear opportunity to refuse participation.

  • Explains and informs consent for plasmapheresis and immunization to donors including a description of the plasmapheresis procedure, hazards, potential adverse reactions, and specific immunization programs.

  • Provides treatment to donors who experience adverse reactions to the plasma donation procedure (i.e. Hypotensive Reaction, Citrate Reaction, Local Injury, Allergic Reaction, etc.) or immunization.

  • Contacts emergency services if medical treatment exceeds scope of individual license or ability, as needed.

  • Notifies Center Medical Director if donors are transported by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to an urgent care or hospital.

  • Assists in performing the following duties in the plasma collection center, as necessary:

  1. Completes plasmapheresis and whole blood procedures.

  2. Ensures donor safety and monitors for reactions

  3. Encourages donor’s return visits by maintaining a cheerful and friendly attitude.

  4. Ensures accurate documentation on the donor chart.

  • Administers immunizations following SOPs and manufacturers guidelines and monitors responses.

  • Provides appropriate and confidential counseling to donors, as needed.

  • Maintains the plasma collection center’s emergency medical kit and equipment in accordance with SOPs to ensure equipment is up to date and functioning properly.

  • Reviews test results and consults with Center Medical Director on any unusual, abnormal, or elevated test results and non-routine situations.

  • Ensures all medical incidents are reviewed by Center Medical Director.

  • Reviews and posts SPE/4-month lab work test results and performs donor suitability evaluation.

  • Notifies donors of positive viral marker testing results (i.e., Hep-B, Hep-C, HIV, Syphilis, etc.).

  • Participates in plasma collection center’s safety committee, as needed.

  • Educates staff on donor suitability and medical-related questions.

  • Manages employee Hepatitis B Vaccine administration and other specialty immunization programs.

General

  • Meet with supervisor/manager on a regular basis to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and/or improving services.

  • Complete all assigned tasks in a timely manner as instructed by supervisor/manager.

  • Adhere to work schedules in completing and performing assigned tasks.

  • Perform any miscellaneous duties or work assignments, as required.

PRIMARY CONTACTS

  • Center management, donors, employees, auditors, inspectors, vendors, corporate staff, and visitors.

REQUIREMENTS

Education, Qualifications & Experience

  • High school diploma, or equivalent, required.

  • Currently licensed to practice in State in which the plasma collection center operates.

  • Current license is valid and in good standing with applicable licensing board and able to pass medical credential evaluation.

  • Graduate of a recognized healthcare-related educational program such as a Nursing or Physician Assistant. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) may be approved if prior experience is at an advanced level of operation.

  • Minimum of one-year experience as a licensed professional in a healthcare environment preferred.

  • Current CPR certification required.

  • Plasma collection center or blood bank industry experience preferred.

  • EMT-A, Paramedic, LPN/LVN or RN license, as allowed by State laws in work location.

  • EMT-B and EMT-I license, as allowed by State laws in work location for employees hired prior to May 30, 2019.

Any exceptions to these licensure requirements for employees hired after May 30, 2019, must be approved by the Corporate Medical Director or designee.

Physical Requirements

Work is primarily light in nature, with exerting up to 50lbs of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Use of fingers to type and / or enter numbers on keyboards, keypads, etc. along with grabbing object(s). Additionally includes, reaching, handling, talking, hearing, bending, stooping, and walking. Involves sitting, standing, and walking most of the time.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily inside with well-lighted and well-ventilated areas.

  • Potential exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens.

  • Periodic exposure to an environment with a temperature of -40°C for short periods of time.
